This study is a ethnography that analyzed the symbolic system and social meaning that appeared in the ritual process through the experience of participating in the ritual of Katmiyai. The influence of the media and Hollywood films has brought image of the destructive faith and violent movement of fundamentalists about Islam, but as there are various denominations in Christianity, there are various denominations in Islam. The researcher participated in the ritual of the Kathmiya Sufi order, which has the largest number of believers in the Arab, for one year, and studied the relationship between symbols and social dynamics in the ritual in depth through the cultural analysis of Clifford Geertz. In the culture of the Kathmiya order, aggression, violence, or destructive meaning was difficult to find. The rituals of the Katmiya are largely divided into introductory rituals and worship; introductory rituals and worship, a kind of recitation, Dhikr, and a kind of dance, Raqs, are practiced. The ritual of the Katmiya contains the meaning of “1 safety from natural disasters, 2 health of the body, 3 overcoming the fear of death, 4 unity with God, 5 importance of knowledge, 6 improvement of community, 7 strengthening of family community, 8 will for good and escape from sin”. The ritual symbol of the Katmiya means to secure safety, and is communal, peaceful and nonviolent.

본 연구는 이슬람 대표 수피 종단인 카트미야의 의례에 참여한 경험을 통해 의례 과 정에 나타난 상징체계와 사회적 의미를 분석한 문화기술지이다. 언론과 헐리우드 영화 의 영향으로 이슬람이라고 하면 원리주의자들의 파괴적 신앙과 폭력적 운동을 떠올린 다. 그러나 기독교에 다양한 교단이 있듯이 이슬람에도 다양한 교단이 있다. 연구자는 아랍에서 가장 많은 신도를 보유하고 있는 카트미야 수피 종단의 의례에 1년 동안 참여 하고, 의례에 나타난 상징과 사회적 역동의 관련성을 클리포드 기어츠(Clifford Geertz)의 문화분석을 통해 심층적으로 연구하였다. 카트미야 종단의 문화에는 공격성 과 폭력 혹은 파괴적인 의미는 찾아보기 어려웠다. 카트미야 종단의 의례는 크게 입문의식과 예배로 나뉜다. 입문의식과 예배에서는 일 종의 암송인 디크르(Dhikr)와 일종의 춤인 라끄스(Raqs)를 실천한다. 카트미야 종단의 의례에는 「① 자연재해로부터의 안전과 ② 신체의 건강, ③ 죽음의 공포 극복과 ④ 신과의 합일, ⑤ 지식의 중요성, ⑥ 공동체성의 향상과 ⑦ 가족 공동체 강화, ⑧ 선을 향한 의지와 ➈ 죄로부터의 탈출」의 의미가 담겨 있다. 카트미야 종단의 의례 상징에는 안전 을 확보하고자 하는 의미가 있으며, 공동체적이고 평화적이며 비폭력적이다.
