Starting from the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis: close relationship between language, thought and cultural perception of reality, I exemplifies this in the Russian idiomatic expressions(word and phrases), focused on the perception of 'spaces'.
The Russian idiomatic expressions contain some metaphorical aspects of spaces: 1. ontological aspect (be or not to be) 2. topological aspect (some where in the space) 3. subject's existential aspect (internal and external) as are exemplified below. ‘Лица нет’ (There is no face) means one's unwell, sick or seedy condition by 'be or not-to-be metaphor. ‘Падать/ упасть духом’ (The soul falls) means one' frustration by downward movement in the space. ‘От всего сердца’ (from the whole heart) means sincerity and true heart by space metaphor of internal movement. he translation-interpreting do not only refer to grammar and semantic understanding of language but to its metaphorical culture.
