Iron manufacturing-related researches are recently being conducted in multiple dimensions and sides as excavation research data accumulates. In contrast, there tends to be relatively less attention and insufficient studies and investigations done on the iron-manufacturing remains from after the Middle Age than those from the ancient time. In particular, excavations were conducted on the Boeun Daewon-ri site when there was lack of understanding on Joseon Dynasty's ironworks due to insufficient archaeological data. A so-called 'Stone-Built Iron-Manufacturing Furnace' Iron-smelting furnace from late Joseon Dynasty was found from the Boeun Daewon-ri site in a relatively good condition. It is also notable that the site has all natural-geographical elements as well as humanities-geographical elements sufficient to produce iron. Therefore, I looked at the archaeological significance and the characters of the remains centering around the Boeun Daewon-ri site, and approached with various possibilities open on when and how such advanced technology was introduced. Additionally, I have systemised the reasons behind iron production at the Boeun Daewon-ri site by contextualising Joseon Dynasty's handicraft industrial system and economic system in order to find social meaning and factors of the changes in Joseon Dynasty's iron-manufacturing

최근 발굴조사 자료가 축적되며 제철관련 연구가 다양하게 진행되고 있으나, 고고학 자료가 적은조선시대 제철로에 대한 이해는 아직 부족한 실정이다. 이 글에서는 최근 보고된 보은 대원리 유적의 이른바 “석축형제철로”를 통해 유적의 성격과 고고학적 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 대원리 유적 주변으로 철과 관련된 지명이 다수 존재하고, 철광산의 분포를 확인할 수 있었으며, 인접지역에 목탄요군이 밀집하는 등 철을 생산하는데 있어 인문・자연・지리적 요소가 충분히 갖추어져 있음이 밝혀졌다. 그리고 석축형제철로 세부구조를 살펴진일보한 제철 시스템임을 확인하였으며, 배소시설을 통해 철 생산을 위한 작업동선을 유추해 볼 수있었다. 또한, 국내・외에서 발견된 석축형제철로 또는 조업방식의 유사성이 확인되는 자료를 토대로 대원리 유적 석축형제철로의 특징을 찾을 수 있었다. 아울러 조선시대 제철조업이 변화하는 요인과 이들의 사회적인 의미를 찾고자 조선시대 수공업 체제와 경제 체제를 맥락화하였다. 그 결과, 보은 대원리 유적에서 철을 생산하게 된 이유는 입지적인 요건도 분명 확인되지만, 특히 잠채와 잠조화매의 영향이 위치선정에 작용했을 것으로 판단하였다
