This study reviews pre-modern Korean literature and environmental studies performed outside Korea, focusing on English scholarship published during 2000-2020. The studies heavily relied on poems, which were used as examples to reveal pre-modern Korean people’s respect for untouched nature. The studies also largely adopted a comparative perspective by examining two or more countries’ environmental phenomena and people’s ecological perceptions. The studies took interdisciplinary approaches by adopting historical records, literature, and ecological studies. Based on the reviews, this study highlights the necessity of translating the broad selection of pre-modern narratives into other languages. Pre-modern Korean narratives are rich resources depicting people’s ideas on farming, deforestation, natural disasters, and animal diseases in their everyday lives. Moreover, more studies must adopt works depicting pre-modern Korea’s ecological degradation in pre-modern Korea. Recent studies offer evidence against the popular perception often held within and outside of East Asia that environmental degradation in the region began in the late nineteenth century-a period when East Asian peoples assimilated Western nations’ technologies and industries. Additionally, advanced research must consider Korea’s own historical experiences in understanding Korean people’s views on nature and finding Korea’s place on the world stage.

현대는 전(全)지구적인 생태환경의 위기를 극복할 수 있는 가치관 전환이 요청되는 시기이며 동아시아는 이에 관한 물질적ㆍ정신적 자원의 보고이자 특별한 주목의 대상이 되었다. 이에 따라 국외의 동아시아 생태연구가 활발히 진행되고 있으며 한국 전근대의 생태환경 연구도 양적ㆍ질적으로 성장했다. 본고는 전근대 한국의 생태문학을 다룬 영어권 저서를 중심으로 연구사 동향에 주목했다. 연구에서는 시(詩)에 집중한 갈래적 편중이 보였으며, 비교문화적 시각과 학제간 연구를 통해 한국적 특징을 살펴보았다. 이러한 연구 경향은 후속 연구에서 전근대 산문의 번역과 도입의 필요성, 인간과 자연 사이에 벌어진 투쟁과 갈등에 대한 자료의 수용, 도시 공간의 연구, 중국 중심의 하나된 동아시아적 시각을 경계해야 함을 시사한다. 생태문학 연구는 문학과 실제 자연과의 관계성이 중심이 되기에 하나의 학문범주나 하나의 국가에 고립된 학문 분야가 될 수 없으며 이론과 실천의 양방향을 살펴야한다. 또한 전근대 연구에서 국내ㆍ외 소통의 단절이 두드러지기에 양방향의 연구성과와 담론이 탄생한 배경을 존중하면서 전근대 한국의 생태환경에 대한 국제적 인식의 틀을 점검하는 것은 국내ㆍ외 연구에 시사점을 제공할 수 있겠다.
