This article introduces the life and missionary work of Dr. Archibald G. Fletcher, who served in Taiku from 1911 to 1942. It may be because Dr. Fletcher served as a lay missionary along with ordained priests during the early mission history of Taiku that he has not received scholarly attention until now. This article seeks to supply that lack in order to do him justice rather than to conduct a critical examination of his work. That said, it does seek to make a contribution to the early history of the Korean church. It looks at Dr. Fletcher with respect to three categories, as a missionary to Korea and the Korean people, as a witness to the gospel, and as a philanthropic humanist. Dr. Fletcher served the people of Taiku for 30 years. Under his leadership, Taiku station grew to have one of the largest mission hospitals in Korea, including a center for lepers. In addition to his medical accomplishments, much of the growth of the churches in the area was attributed to his enthusiasm for the gospel. It is important that his name be remembered, not only for the work he did for people in the past, but for the impact his work continues to have today.
