This paper attempted to present the implications and direction of academic research on Ninjas based on the previous studies. In addition, after examining the starting point of the Ninja, dictionaries, historical documents, and present meanings of Ninja were examined. Previous studies on Ninjas made several attempts to give a suitable meaning to the Ninjas and defined them academically and clearly. The Ninja was treated only as a representative subculture in Japan, so the study of Ninja was different from academic research subjects. However, the work of imparting academic definition and meaning to Ninja was done from various fields, such as history, literature, and folklore. In the present paper, we first looked at what Ninja is and specific conditions that can be defined as Ninja. Changes in the name of Ninjas and the characteristics of Ninjas by period were also considered. Also, the characteristics of the Ninja were further embodied by distinguishing between the Ninja and the no-man class. We tried to examine the Ninja statue by comparing with academic definition, research direction, and warrior characteristics of Ninja.

본 논문에서는 일본의 대표적인 서브컬처로는 인정받아왔으나, 학문적 연구 대상 에서 소외되어 왔던 닌자에 초점을 맞추어 학술적인 연구 방법과 그 방향성을 제시 하고자 했다. 또한 닌자의 시작과 그 연구의 출발점에 대해 살펴본 후, 닌자에 대한 사전적 정의, 역사적, 현재적 의미를 고찰하였다. 닌자에 관한 초기의 선행 연구들은 닌자에 의미를 부여하고 학술적으로 명확하게 정의하려는 것들이 많았다. 그것은 닌 자가 마니아층의 편중된 캐릭터로만 취급되어 학술적인 연구 대상과는 거리감이 있 었기 때문이다. 하지만 최근에 이르러서는 닌자에 대한 학술적인 정의와 의미 부여 작업이 선행 되며 역사, 문학, 민속 등 다양한 방면에서의 접근이 시도되고 있다. 특히 일본 미에 대학은 닌자학 대학원 과정을 설치하고 국제닌자연구센터와 국제닌자학회를 개설하 였다. 일본을 대표하는 닌자라는 대중문화 캐릭터를 역사, 풍속, 문학, 과학 등의 다 양한 범주 안에서 고증하며 학술적 의미를 찾는 연구 작업이 활발히 진행 중이다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 닌자가 무엇인지, 닌자로 정의될 수 있는 구체적인 조건이 무엇인지에 대해 살펴보았다. 닌자를 부르는 명칭의 변천과 시대별 닌자의 특성등도 함께 고찰하였다. 닌자와 무사 계급과의 공통점과 차이점을 『만센슈카이』 등과 같은 인술서를 통해 비교하여 닌자의 고유한 성격과 특징을 명확히 하고자 했다. 이 와 같이 닌자에 대한 학술적인 정의와 연구의 방향성, 무사 계급과의 비교를 통한 구체화된 닌자상에 대해 살펴보고자 했다.
