This study aims to present the issues of the educational gap and trends in intergenerational social mobility in Japanese society by organizing past studies on these topics. Prior research has shown that inequality in educational opportunities in Japan persists despite the rapid expansion of upper secondary and tertiary education, and claims that this tendency may grow further are also gaining traction. In terms of the educational gaps, the association between educational attainment and occupational status has traditionally been weak in Japanese culture, but following a long recession, the gap between college graduates and low-educated people is widening. Japanese society has a high absolute and consistent relative mobility rate when it comes to intergenerational social mobility. Given that Korea and Japan have similar social and historical experiences, we expect that the comparison of the two countries, particularly focusing on the Japanese instance, will provide insight into the solutions to Korea’s current inequality and social mobility issues. In this regard, we evaluate the data available in Korea and Japan for comparative research, as well as some new problems to be investigated in the two nations.

이 논문은 일본사회의 교육격차와 세대 간 사회이동을 역사적인 맥락 속에서 정리하고 이와 관련된 기존의 연구결과를 소개하는 것을 목표로 한다. 기존의 연구들은 일본의 교육기회 불평등이 중고등교 육의 급격한 팽창 이후에도 여전히 지속되고 있음을 밝히고 있으며 오늘날 이러한 경향이 더욱 커질 수 있는 가능성이 존재함을 지적하는 주장도 힘을 얻고 있다. 교육격차가 가져온 결과와 관련하여 일 본사회에서 전통적으로 교육수준과 직업 사이의 상관성은 높지 않은 편이었으나 장기불황을 거치며 대학 졸업자와 저학력자 사이의 격차는 커지는 추세이다. 세대 간 사회이동의 경우 일본 사회는 높은 절대적 이동률과 안정적인 상대적 이동률을 보이고 있었다. 한국과 일본은 사회적이고 역사적인 속성 을 공유하고 있으며, 일본의 경험이 한국보다 시기적으로 빠른 편이다. 두 국가의 비교를 통해 공통적 으로 당면하고 있는 불평등과 사회이동 문제들에 대한 해답의 단서를 얻을 수 있을 것이라 기대한다. 이와 관련하여 비교연구 수행 시 필요한 한일 양국의 자료를 검토하고 두 국가에서 새롭게 살펴봐야 할 몇 가지 질문들을 제시해 본다.
