This study empirically examines whether the age of plant influences the profitability in general hospitals in South Korea. Subsequently, this study investigates whether the hospital characteristics moderate the relationship between the age of plant and the profitability. Using a four-year panel dataset on 1,058 hospital-year observations from 2016 to 2019 at Hospital Accounting Standards System, this study conducts panel regression approach to investigate the relationship. The results show that the age of plant and the profitability have a significant negative association. However, this relationship is contingent on the characteristics of the hospitals: whether the hospitals are tertiary or general hospitals. While the age of plant and the profitability have a significant and positive association in tertiary hospitals, they have a significant and negative association in general hospitals. This study provides two major insights. First, this is the first study to investigate the effect of age of plant in hospitals in South Korea. Second, this study provides practical implications that hospital administrators in general hospitals would consider that lowering the age of plant lead to higher profits. This study also shows that the effect of the age of plant is contingent upon the characteristics of the hospitals.

본 연구는 의료기관 회계정보 공시 시스템으로부터 수집된 2016년부터 2019년까지의 총 1,058개 종합병원- 연도 자료를 바탕으로 시설 노후화와 수익성의 관계를 패널회귀모형을 이용하여 분석하였다. 실증분석 결과 종합병원의 시설 노후화와 수익성은 유의한 음(-)의 관계를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 이러한 관계는 종합병 원이 상급종합병원인지 그 외 종합병원인지 여부에 따라 다르게 나타났다. 상급종합병원의 경우 시설 노후화와 수익성이 유의한 양(+)의 관계를 나타내는 반면, 그 외 종합병원의 경우 시설 노후화와 수익성이 유의한 음(-)의 관계를 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 두 가지 의의를 갖고 있다. 첫째, 국내 병원을 대상으로한 연구로는 처음으로 시설 노후화의 영향을 실증분석하였다는 것이다. 둘째, 상급종합병원이 아닌 일반적인 종합병원의 경우 시설 노후화에 대한 개선이 더 중요하다는 실무적인 시사점을 경영진에게 제공하였 다는 점이다. 따라서 병원 유형이나 특성에 따라 설비투자비용에 대해 다른 관점을 가져야 한다는 근거를 마련 하였다.
