The present study compares South Korean and the U.S. newspapers’ reliance on news beats and the depth of their articles during the pandemic that has restricted face-to-face coverage. Based on the results of the analysis of 150 educational articles in The Hankyoreh and The New York Times, we found that the former was 2.9 times larger than the latter in the average proportion of citing press releases from news beats in an article. Furthermore, The New York Times was 6.7 times larger than The Hankyoreh in the proportion that reflects the voices of students, parents, and citizens in an article. In terms of the depth of the articles, The New York Times provided 7.5 times more transparent sources, 2.3 times more perspectives, and 2.6 times more stakeholders than The Hankyoreh. According to the results of our qualitative analysis, The Hankyoreh did not interview any college students, reporting that Korean colleges returned some of their tuition to students during the pandemic. Taken together, the results of this study suggest that South Korean media should break away from excessive dependence on news beats and actively reflect citizens’ voices in their articles.

이 연구는 면대면 취재 제약을 받는 팬데믹 기간 한국·미국 신문의 출입처 의존과 뉴스의 심층성을 비교했다. <한겨레>와 <뉴욕타임스> 교육기사 150건을 분석한 결과, 기사 내 출입처 비중에서, <한겨레>는 <뉴욕타임스>보다 평균 2.9배 컸다. 학생, 학부 모, 시민의 목소리를 반영한 비중에서, <뉴욕타임스>는 <한겨레>보다 6.7배 컸다. 심층 성에서, <뉴욕타임스>는 <한겨레>보다 7.5배 많은 투명취재원, 2.3배 많은 관점, 2.6배 많은 이해당사자를 제공했다. 독창성에서도 두 신문은 유의한 차이가 있었다. 질적 분 석에서, <한겨레>는 등록금 반환 소식을 전하면서 당사자인 대학생 취재원을 두지 않았 다. <뉴욕타임스>는 ‘뉴스의 주인은 행정기관이 아니라 코로나19로 달라진 삶을 사는 보통사람들’이라는 점을 드러냈다. 이 연구는 국내 언론이 과도한 출입처 의존 관행에 서 탈피해 기사에 다른 목소리와 이야기를 대폭 반영해야 한다고 제안한다.
