This article aims at the basic understanding for the liminality, which is the significant cultural-anthropological concept, for the current age of the diverse, innovative changes and their diccontinuity. THe liminality is one of the major social-scientific paradigms that explain the various changes at the multiple levels of human societies. The Christian rediscovery as well as the introductory comprehension of the cultural-anthropological liminality have been investigated for understanding the new paradigm to interpret the current changes. One of the main characteristics of liminality is the ambiguity and inbetweenness, especially in temporal dimension. It is said that the liminal transition appears in the progress of the following three stages: separation, margin, and aggregation. Even though the liminal stage is the unstructured situation with chaos, it is likely to be able to offer the optimistic perspective for the future since it is the transitional period as the inter-structure, which separates from the previous paradigm, and simultaneously, pursues the coming future’s paradigms. Therefore, the paradigm of the liminality can be the effective instrument to understand the social-scientific changes in terms of the Christian history and worldview. Particularly, the necessity of liminality paradigm is elevated by the accelerated changes by the hyper-technology, pandemic phenomena, etc. nowadays, which require the continuing pursuit for the uncertain future as well as the radical adaption of separation from the past root paradigms. Additionally, it is helpful to regard that the marginalization of the Chrisitianity in this age can be reinterpreted as the phenomena of temporal liminality. The praxis for this liminal period is summarized as the concentration upon the fundamental Christian values, the endurability against the ambiguity, and the understanding of the emergence rather than the mechanical and analytical solutions.

본고는 다양하고 급격하며 불연속적인 변화를 경험하고 있는 이 시대의 이해를 위 한 문화인류학적 개념인 리미널리티의 기초적 이해를 위한 것이다. 리미널리티는 한 마디로 인간 사회의 여러 규모에 대하여 변화를 설명하고자 하는 패러다임이다. 본고 는 이 급격한 변화의 시대에서 그 변화의 이해를 위한 리미널리티라는 문화인류학적 개념의 기초를 시대적으로 재발견하는 의미를 갖는다. 그리고 그 기본 패러다임을 새 롭게 이해하고 간략이 적용하는 것을 살펴보았다. 리미널리티의 특성은 한마디로 모호함이며 동시에 중간적 (bewixt)인 것으로서 이 리미널한 전이 (transition)는 분리 (separation), 주변화 (margin), 그리고 집합 (aggregation) 의 3단계 변화 과정 중에서 나타나는 것이라고 한다. 이 단계는 혼돈과 비구조적인 상황이지만 이것은 구조간의 과도기적 단계로서 기존의 패러다임과의 분리와 함께 새 로운 미래의 패러다임이 모색되는 것으로서 비교적 변화에 대한 긍정적인 시각을 제 공하고 있다. 이 시대를 리미널한 단계로 간주하는 시각은 이 유래 없는 변화에 대한 새로운 이 해를 제공할 수 있다. 그리고 기독교적으로도 인생과 기독교 역사를 리미너리티의 단 계로 보는 세계관은 이 시대를 위한 유익한 변화 이해의 도구라고 할 수 있다. 특히 현재의 정보통신 및 인공 지능 기술 등에 의한 변혁, 팬데믹 현상 등은 세계적이고 국지적인 리미널리티 상황에 대한 해석에 더 힘을 실어주고 있으며 기존의 기저 패러다임으로부터의 탈피에 대한 적응 및 불확실한 미래에 대한 지속적인 모색을 도모하 게 하고 있다. 현 기독교의 여러 한계 상황을 주변화 현상이라는 것보다는 시간적 리 미널한 단계로서의 과도기적 해석이 새로운 패러다임의 구축에 도움이 될 것이다. 이 리미널리티의 시대의 실천은 기계적이고 분석적인 해답을 추구하려는 것보다는 더욱 핵심 가치에 대한 집중과 모호함에 대한 내구성 및 창발성에 대한 이해를 요한다.
