This paper presents a Christian educational study on the spirituality of Martin Luther and John Calvin. By examining various definitions of spirituality, I observed that the key characteristic of spirituality is self-transcendence, which means going out of oneself. This definition includes three facets, namely, moving toward God, moving toward others, and looking at oneself in an objective manner. Through these characteristics of spirituality, I categorized the spirituality of Luther and Calvin into I-God and I-neighbor relationships and examined them through their theological writings. In this manner, I learned that the relationship with God should be God-centered. In addition, I found that the relationship with neighbors should be manifested in good works as the fruit of justification. Luther speaks of the theology of the cross, especially in relation to God. The cross illustrates suffering, shame, and powerlessness. However, the grace and mercy of God lay behind the curtain of suffering and weakness. Faith enables humans to discover this kind of God, to stand firm in the midst of the trials of the cross, and, ultimately, to discover the image of God behind the curtain. For Calvin, knowledge of God and piety are key elements in his theology and spiritual formation, such knowledge is linked to piety. Moreover, he says that knowing God leads to piety, and humans come to know God through pious hearts. This knowledge of God is also connected to knowledge about the self. Through knowledge of God, we can truly know who we are. We can also move toward God by examining our misery. God is beyond our limits. Thus, we must acknowledge the limits of our understanding of Him. God humbled himself for man and spoke in a manner that man can understand. This nonshared dimension between God and man is a mystery to man, such that we can only gradually get to know God through faith. Based on these observations, I found implications for Christians. Lastly, through this perspective, Christians can be educated to enable them to live righteously in the Gospel.

이 글은 루터와 칼뱅의 영성에 대하여 기독교교육적으로 연구를 한 논문이다. 이 러한 연구를 위해 먼저, 영성에 대한 다양한 정의를 살펴보았고, 이를 통해 영성의 주 요한 특징이 ‘자기초월’이라는 것을 알게 되었다. 이러한 자기 초월은 자기로부터 벗 어나는 것으로 초월자를 향해 나아가기도 하고, 타인을 향해 나아가기도 하며, 자기 자신을 객관적으로 바라볼 수 있게 한다. 이러한 영성의 특징으로 루터와 칼뱅의 영 성을 나와 하나님과의 관계, 나와 이웃과의 관계로 범주화하여 그들의 신학저술을 통 해 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 나와 하나님과의 관계는 하나님 중심적이며, 나와 이웃과의 관계는 칭의의 열매로서 선을 행하는 것으로 알게 되었다. 루터의 하나님과의 관계에서 십자가의 신학이 특별히 두드러지는데, 십자가는 고 난, 부끄러움과 무력함을 보여주지만, 이러한 고난과 약함의 커튼 뒤에 하나님의 은혜 와 자비가 있다. 믿음은 이러한 하나님의 모습을 발견하게 하며, 십자가의 시련 속에 서도 승리하게 하며, 궁극적으로 커튼 뒤에 계신 하나님을 발견하게 한다. 칼뱅에게 있어서 하나님 지식과 경건은 신학과 영성형성에 핵심 요소이다. 하나님 지식은 경건과 연결이 되는데, 하나님을 아는 것은 경건을 일으키고, 경건한 마음은 인간이 하나 님을 참되게 알아갈 수 있게 한다. 그런데 이러한 하나님 지식은 우리 자신에 대한 지식과도 연결이 된다. 하나님 지식은 우리 자신의 모습을 참되게 바라보게 하며, 우 리 자신의 비참한 모습을 마주하게 하고, 하나님께 나아가게 한다. 또한 하나님은 우 리의 한계를 넘어서시는 분이시기에, 우리의 이해의 한계를 인정해야 하는 것을 알 수 있다. 하나님은 인간을 위해 낮아지셔서, 인간이 이해할 수 있게 말씀하시는 분이 시기 때문이다. 이러한 하나님과 인간과의 비공유적인 차원은 인간에게는 신비의 차 원이며, 우리는 믿음으로 안에서 하나님을 점차적으로 알아갈 수 있다. 이러한 특징을 토대로 기독교교육적인 함의를 발견하여, 기독교교육에 있어 신비교 육, 이웃과의 관계에서 열매를 드러내는 교육, 바른 앎을 동반하는 교육으로 볼 수 있 다. 이를 바탕으로 해서 볼 때 기독교교육의 과제는 기독교인들이 복음 안에서 바르 게 살 수 있도록 교육하는 것이라고 할 수 있다.
