This paper aims to analyze the (un)conscious acceptance and rejection of imperial logic in Nosei Iwakichi's literary works in Asia Review and capture the phase in which these writings deviate from imperial typicality. 'I', the imperial Japanese man in his works, travels to Korea and other places as confirming the inferiority of the overseas territories and the superiority of Japan. However, the imperialist discourse and knowledge are increasingly subject to skepticism in his works. 'I' distances itself from the knowledge field produced and distributed by the imperial media by expressing cynicism against war. In addition, the Korean woman, who had remained the object of otherization, appears as another subject confronting 'I', and the hierarchical political reality of colonial Korea and imperial Japan is strongly evoked. As a result, the desire of the male subject 'I' to enjoy Korean women as an aesthetic object is thwarted. Finally, by placing a Japanese man in the position of the object of observation, 'I' is given an opportunity for self􋹲reflection. Through the experiences in Korea as a contact zone, 'I' realizes the contradictory and hybrid desire of colonialism and the unstable status of the subject. Such contradictions and tension can be imagined as a channel leading to the implosion of aggressive imperialism.

본 논문은 『아세아공론(亞細亞公論)』 소재 노세 이와키치(能勢岩吉) 문예물에 나타난 제국 주의적 논리의 (무)의식적 수용과 거부의 양상을 분석하고 이를 통해 이 글들이 제국주의적 전형성에서 벗어나는 국면을 포착한다. 노세의 문예물에 등장하는 제국 남성 ‘나’는 주로 조 선 등지를 여행하며 외지(外地)의 열등함과 일본의 우월성을 확인한다. 그러나 노세의 글에서 제국주의적 담론과 지식은 점차 회의의 대상이 된다. 먼저 ‘나’는 전쟁에 대한 냉소를 표함으 로써 제국의 미디어가 생산, 유통한 지식장과 거리를 둔다. 또한 타자화의 대상에 머물렀던 조선 여성이 ‘나’와 대결하는 또 다른 주체로 등장하고 피식민 조선과 제국 일본의 위계적인 정치 현실이 강하게 환기되면서 조선 여성을 미적 대상으로 향유하고자 하는 남성 주체 ‘나’ 의 욕망은 좌절된다. 마지막으로 제국 남성을 관찰의 대상의 자리에 세움으로써 관찰 주체인 제국 남성에게 자기 성찰의 계기를 마련한다. ‘나’는 조선을 접촉지대로 경험함으로써 모순되 고 혼종적인 식민주의의 욕망과 불안정한 주체의 지위를 실감하게 된다. 이와 같은 모순과 동요는 정복적 제국주의를 내파할 수 있는 하나의 통로로 상상될 수 있다.
