In the Joseon Dynasty, daily food, which was less symbolic compared to other national rituals, was served as per Sokje (俗祭), the local royal ancestral rituals. This paper examined whether such a ritual form existed within the Chinese national ritual system. Therefore, the national ritual systems of the Ming Dynasty, and the Joseon Dynasty were compared. Sokje was a ritual held for the following subjects: (1) separate shrines and tombs for previous kings enshrined in Jongmyo Shrine, (2) shrines and tombs for the biological mother of the king, (3) shrines and tombs for the biological father of the king, and (4) shrines and tombs for the crown prince who died early. There were similar rituals in the Ming Dynasty: the Fengxian Palace (奉先殿) for previous emperors, the Fengci palace (奉慈殿) for the biological mother of the emperor, and the shrine for the biological father of the emperor (獻皇帝廟). These rituals were intended to serve their ancestors closer, and did not strictly follow the Confucian ritual regulations. Consequently, for these rituals, the food eaten when ancestors were alive is used, rather than food with strong symbolism. Therefore, it is necessary to look at Joseon's local royal ancestral rituals (Sokje) from the perspective that it is related not only to Joseon's unique characteristics, but also to universal aspects.

이 글은 조선시대 俗祭에서는 여타의 국가제사[正祭]와는 달리 일상식을 올린다 는 특성에 주목하여, 이와 같은 제례 형식이 중국 국가제사 체계 내에도 존재하였 는지에 대한 문제 제기에서 시작하였다. 이에 明 황실의 조상제례와 비교해봄으로 써 조선시대 속제의 성격을 규명하고자 하였다. 조선시대 속제의 대상은 종묘에 모시는 역대 왕을 위한 별도의 사당과 능, 왕의 생모와 친부를 위한 사당과 무덤, 요절한 세자의 무덤 등이다. 속제라는 명칭은 ‘俗’이라는 단어 때문에 조선의 특수한 제사라고 이해되기 쉽다. 하지만 明에서도 태묘에 부묘된 선조를 살아있는 것처럼 모시려고 만든 봉선전, 황제의 생모를 위 한 봉자전, 생부를 위한 헌황제묘 제사가 국가의례에 포함되어 있어 조선 속제와 의 공통점이 확인된다. 이러한 제사는 예제에서 벗어나더라도 조상을 인정에 따라 모시려는 공통된 이유에서 만들어진 것으로, 음식을 일상식 형태로 진설하는 점이 특징이다. 따라서 조선의 속제는 경전에 근거하지는 않았지만 조상을 살아계셨던 때와 같이 모시기위해 음식을 시속에 따라 차린 의례라고 보아야 할 것이다. 이와 같은 관점에서 보 면 명대의 황실 조상 의례와 조선의 속제가 가지는 공통성을 이해할 수 있으며, 중 국의 황실 조상제사도 속제의 성격을 가졌다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 조선의 속제 문제는 조선만의 특수성이 아니라 왕실 조상을 혈연적으로 더욱 가까이 모시려 했던 보편적인 정서 측면에서도 바라보는 것이 필요하다. 이 글은 조선시대의 속제와 명대의 황실의례를 비교하여 속제가 예의 보편적 원리 속 에 위치하고 있음을 드러내면서도 명 의례와는 다른 특수성을 구체적으로 살펴보 았다는 의의가 있다. 이 같은 기준을 두고 속제의 찬품이 가지는 조선만의 특성을 살펴본다면 더욱 깊은 이해가 가능할 것이다.
