Bilingual English writer Junot Díaz known as a Dominican American writer has discarded using italics in his novels such as Drown which have been normatively used to mark non-English languages as a foreign language in English writings. He calls his such writing practice as a political move to give his traumatic experience back to English-only -Anglo-white-Americans. The purpose of this paper is to argue that Díaz’s such move is rooted in his post colonial spirit to resurge the post colonial situation of the current normative English reading experience. For this aim, this paper analyzes his use of non italics for Spanish expressions in his short novel Drown and his interviews regarding his normative use of Spanish expressions in his English writings. Based on Critical Discourse Analysis which takes discourse as social practices exhibiting power relation, this paper has looked at the addressee relation and identity aspects of Díaz’s text and discourse.

이중 언어 영어 작가인 후노 디아스(Junot Díaz)는 영어 외의 언어 표현들을 이탤릭체로 표기하는 전통적인 영어 글쓰기 규범을 거부해 왔다. 그의 이러한 도전은 정치적인 행위로 영어와 (라틴계)스페인어를 균등하게 대하는 초국가적 실천에 속한다. 본 논문의 목적은 디아스의 탈 이탤릭체 담론을 그의 단편 소설 텍스트 Drown과 그의 담화를 중심으로 분석한다. 비판 담론분석의 틀 기반으로 이 논문은 그의 탈 이탤릭체 선택은 독자와의 관계 그리고 이산으로서의 그의 정체성이 깊은 연관성이 있음을 논의할 것이다. 이러한 스페인어의 탈 이탤릭체 표기를 통하여 디아스는 단일 언어로서 영어 사용자와 화해를 구하거나 조화를 추구하는 것이 아니라 지금의 후기 식민지적 상황을 전복시키고자 저항하는 것이다. 본 논문은 그의 이러한 저항의 근간은 영어와 스페인어 어디에도 속하지 않는 독자들의 피식민지 경험을 식민주의자들 즉, 영어 단일어만을 사용하는 독자들에게도 되돌려주려는 그의 탈식민주의 정신에 있음을 주장할 것이다.
