Swimming, which appeared in history from the early days of mankind and developed as a sport, was recognized for its value and was continuously reflected in the documents of the elementary school curriculum, but it was having difficulties in terms of practicality. On the other hand, lifesaving swimming, which was introduced in earnest after the Sewol ferry incident, is actively practiced at the school field, but unlike swimming in curriculum education, it is insufficient in terms of reflection of curriculum documents. This study focused on these two aspects of swimming education and attempted to diagnose the current situation and suggest implications through diachronic search and synchronic analysis based on the physical education curriculum. To this end, from the first physical education curriculum to the current 2015 revised physical education curriculum, swimming education was reviewed, and the two flows of swimming education were compared and analyzed at this point. Through a synchronic analysis, it was confirmed that swimming stroke tended to reduce the application to the curriculum and move toward absence in practicality and that lifesaving swimming was being practiced, but the basis for the curriculum was insufficient. Synchronic analysis was conducted at the document level and practical level of the curriculum, and although the practicality of the current swimming education has increased, it can be derived that new problems arise both in terms of application and practicality. Based on these results, three ways to develop future swimming education according to the pattern of application to the curriculum documents of lifesaving swimming were presented.

인류의 초기부터 역사에 등장하여 스포츠로 발전한 수영은 그 가치를 인정받아 초등학교 교육과정 문서에 지속적으 로 반영되었으나 실천성의 측면에서는 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 한편 세월호 사건 이후 본격적으로 도입된 생존수영 은 학교현장에서 활발하게 실천되고 있지만 교과교육에서의 수영과는 달리 교육과정 문서의 반영 측면에서는 부족 함을 보이고 있다. 본 연구는 초등학교 수영교육의 이러한 두 측면에 주목하여 체육과 교육과정을 기반으로 한 통 시적 탐색과 공시적 비교 분석을 통해 현주소를 진단하고 시사점을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 제1차 체육과 교 육과정으로부터 현행 2015 개정 체육과 교육과정에서의 수영교육을 되짚어 보는 과정을 거쳤고, 현 시점에서 수영 교육의 두 흐름을 비교·분석하였다. 통시적 비교를 통하여 영법수영은 교육과정의 반영성의 축소와 실천성의 부재 의 경향을 확인할 수 있었으며, 생존수영은 실천은 되고 있으나 교육과정에서의 근거가 부족한 점을 파악할 수 있 었다. 공시적 분석은 교육과정의 문서적 수준과 실천적 수준에서 이루어졌으며 현재의 수영교육이 실천성은 증대되 었지만 반영성과 실천성 측면에서 모두 새로운 문제가 발생함을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 생존수 영의 교육과정 문서 반영 양상에 따른 미래 수영교육의 발전방안을 세 가지로 제시하였다.
