Using the 2010-2017 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey, this study analyzes the impact of a transition from a two- to single-parent home on children’s development, and explores policy measures to mitigate the negative effects. For the empirical analysis, single- and two-parent families who have similar propensity scores in terms of becoming a single-parent home were matched based on observable characteristics, and a fixed effect difference-in-differences model was used to control the unobservable time-invariant characteristics. The results reveal that the transition is not entirely negative, and can even serve as a positive shift. This paper further discusses policies that can provide not only emotional support from the parents but also cooperation between parents, schools, and the community to resolve the lack of academic skills observed among these children.

본 연구는 2010∼17년 한국아동청소년패널 자료를 이용해 양부모에서 한부모가족으로의 이행이 아동 발달에 미친 영향을 분석하고, 그 부정적 영향을 완화하기 위한 정책 방안을 모색하였다. 실증분석에는 관측 가능한 특성에 따라 한부모가족이 될 성향점수가 유사한 한부모가족과 양부모가족을 매칭한 후 관측 불가능하며 시간에 따라 불변인 특성을 통제하기 위해 고정효과 이중차분법을 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 양부모가족에서 한부모가족이 된다는 것이 아동 발달상 전적으로 부정적 사건이 아니며 긍정적 변화도 동반한 새로운 가족 유형으로의 진입임을 확인할 수 있었다. 나아가 가족유형 변화를 경험한 아동의 학업기술 부족 문제를 해소하기 위해 부모의 정서적 지원 및 부모-학교-지역사회 협력 방안을 구체적으로 제시하였다.
