This study stems from intellectual hunger and question mark on insufficient study in depth on Philip Guston in S. Korea. His works exhibit different personalities chronologically and analysis and arrangement on his external and internal tendency in his works ensures good research. He had grown up with vague identity and his traffic life which entails father’s suicide, older brother’s death and KKK which was a social event at the moment and view of works had become more solemn and de-constructivism considering his early painting that convey gloomy or society-blaming message based on Renaissance art or Cubism. However, his painting had approached fine art and turned into abstract art from 1947 as he was influenced by surrounding coworkers who had established their footholds in the art history. And this study aims to compare and analyze early abstract art works which focus on colors and late monochrome abstract art works in which the figures were displayed in terms of expression and theme. Through the research on the meaning and contents from objects in his works which are combination of rich property of matters and cartoon style that is his signature expression technique since 1967, this article describes understanding in his late painting works and Nixon drawing series as well as his political, social sight and attitude based on the phases of the times. In conclusion, the researcher attempts to interpret connection between his works in chronological order and his life comprehensively in this study and it’s expected to see further study regarding Philip Guston will be conducted in more various ways and a meticulous manner.

본 연구는 국내에서 필립 거스턴에 대한 심층적 연구 가 다양하게 이루어지지 않은 상황에 대한 학술적 갈증 과 의문으로부터 시작된다. 그의 작품은 연대순에 따라 각기 다른 성격을 지니며, 작품의 표면적, 내면적 성향 에 대한 분석과 나열을 통해서 거스턴에 관한 올바른 연구가 가능하다. 그는 모호한 정체성을 바탕으로 성장 하였으며, 아버지의 자살, 형의 죽음, 그리고 당시 사회 적 사건이었던 KKK를 근거로 하는 그의 비극적인 삶과 작품관은 침울하고 고발적인 메시지를 담은 초기회화 작업은 르네상스 미술이나 큐비즘에 근거하여 더욱 진 중하고 해체주의적인 형상으로 다가갔다. 그러나 미술사 적으로 높은 입지에 선 주변 동료들에 의한 환경적인 영향을 토대로 그의 회화는 더욱 순수성을 띤 채 1947 년부터 추상미술로 변화되었고, 본 연구는 색감을 중심 으로 하는 초기 추상 작업과 형상이 가미된 흑백 후기 추상 작업을 표현적, 주제적 측면에서 비교 분석한다. 1967년부터 그를 상징하는 표현기법인 풍부한 물성과 카툰 스타일의 조합이 만들어 낸 작품 속 사물이 갖는 의의와 내용적 측면에서의 연구를 통해 당시 시대상을 근거로 하여 그의 말기 회화작업과 닉슨 드로잉 시리즈 에 대한 이해와 거스턴의 정치적 사회적 시선과 태도를 서술한다. 끝으로, 본 연구자는 이번 연구를 통해 연대 순으로 진행되는 작품과 그의 인생에 대한 연관성과 포괄적인 해석을 시도했으며, 이를 매개로 하여 필립 거스 턴에 대한 연구가 추후에도 더욱 다양하고 면밀히 진행 되기를 바란다.
