This thesis identifies the subject of Lao-tzu chapter 13 as ‘wu-shen’(無身), and interprets the entire chapter 13 consistently with the concept of ‘wu-shen’. In this process, the possibility of overcoming the limitations of the existing understanding of interpreting ‘wu-shen’ as ‘wang-shen’(忘身) or ‘gui-shen’(貴身) - a third interpretation was sought. For the analysis of the original text, the so-called ‘yi-zhang-jie-lao’(以章解老) method was used. It is a method of analyzing Lao-tzu’s writings within the context of the chapter itself. The results obtained through the study are as follows : 寵辱若驚 and 貴大患若身 are both [subject-predicate] phrases. Favour(寵) and honour(貴) are the topics, and disgrace(辱) and great calamity(大患) are predicates. The love(愛) in the last paragraph corresponds to the favour(寵)/the honour(貴) in the first paragraph. The concept of ‘wu-shen’(無身) is the content of the concept of ‘the considering oneself as the belonging to the world’(以身爲天下). ‘Considering oneself as the belonging to the world’(以身爲天下) means the publicization of the rulers themselves. In Chapter 13, it is said that when one is in a high position and he is loved by subordinates, it is the qualifications of the highest ruler to rule the world to behave as a public figure(公人).

본 논문의 목적은 13장의 주제를 무신(無身)으로 파악하고, ‘무신’ 개념을 중심으로 13장 전체를 일관되게 이해하려는 것이다. 이 과정에서 ‘무신’을 ‘망신(忘身)’이나 ‘귀신(貴身)’으로 해석하는 기존의 이해가 지닌 한계를 극복할 수 있는, ‘무신’에 대한 제3의 해석 가능성을 모색하였다. 원문에 대한 분석은 이른바 이장해로(以章解老)의 방법을 사용하였다. ‘이장해로’란 노자의 글을 그것이 들어 있는 장 자체의 맥락 안에서 분석하는 방법이다. 연구를 통해 얻은 결과는 다음과 같다. 총욕약경(寵辱若驚)과 귀대환약신(貴大患若身)은 둘 다 〔주어+술어〕 구문이다. 총(寵)과 귀(貴)는 주제어이고, 욕(辱)과 대환(大患)은 술어이다. 마지막 단락의 귀(貴)/애(愛)는 첫 번째 단락의 ‘총(寵)’/‘귀(貴)’와 상응한다. ‘이신위천하(以身爲天下)’가 바로 무신(無身) 개념의 내용이다. ‘이신위천하’는 위정자 자신의 공공화(公共化)를 의미한다. 13장에서는 높은 자리에 있고 아랫사람의 사랑을 받을 때 공인(公人)으로 처신하는 것이 천하를 다스리는 최고위정자의 자격임을 말했다.
