“Die Braut von Korea” (The Bride of Korea), a ballet composed by Josef Bayer and written by Heinrich Regel, premiered in the K. k. Hof-Operntheater (Imperial Royal Court Theatre) in Vienna, Austria on May 22, 1897. The ballet consists of four acts and nine scenes depicting a fictional love story between the Prince of Korea and his bride Daisha, against the backdrop of the Sino-Japanese War (1894 95). This ballet was performed 38 times in Vienna and 14 times in the Hamburgische Staatsoper (Hamburg State Opera) in 1899, but it disappeared suddenly from the ballet performance schedule in Vienna after 1901. This study aims to analyze “Die Braut von Korea” based on recently published sheet music as well as articles of newspapers and magazines of the time, and explore why it was abruptly removed from the repertoire of the Imperial Royal Court Theatre in Vienna. First, we review the context in which the piece was produced as well as its popularity and status through the examination of historical records regarding the piece. Then, we discuss its composition and characteristics, and finally, explore the reasons for its sudden disappearance from the ballet repertoire in 1901.

요제프 바이어의 음악과 하인리히 레겔의 대본으로 구성된 발레 『한국의 신부』는 1897 년 5월 22일 오스트리아 비엔나의 K. k. 궁정오페라극장에서 초연되었다. 이 발레는 4막 9장으로 구성되었으며, 청일전쟁(1894/95)을 배경으로 그려진 한국의 왕자와 그의 신부 다이샤의 허구적인 사랑이야기이다. 『한국의 신부』는 비엔나에서 총 38회, 1899년 에는 함부르크 시립극장에서 14회 성황리에 공연되었으나, 1901년 이후 비엔나 발레 공연 일정에서 돌연 사라졌다. 이 연구의 목적은 새로 출판된 악보와 당시 신문과 잡지의 기사들을 사용하여 『한국의 신부』를 분석하고, 비엔나 궁정오페라극장의 레퍼토리에서 갑자기 사라진 원인을 파악 하는 것이다. 먼저 1900년경 공연 제반 사료들을 검토하여 작품의 제작 배경 및 인기와 위상을 고찰한다. 다음으로 작품의 구성과 특징을 분석한다. 끝으로 1901년 작품이 철수 된 이유를 살펴본다.
