This study empirically analyzed the relationship between the degree of trade openness and income inequality using data from 2011 to 2018 for 49 countries. Although it is difficult to say that income inequality is a factor that directly affects economic growth, it has been analyzed to have a negative effect on economic growth through empirical studies. Therefore, in order to simultaneously reflect the relationship between income inequality and economic growth as well as the relationship between trade openness and income inequality, panel simultaneous equation model for economic growth and income inequality was used as the research model. The analyses results are summarized as follows. At first, according to the results of analyzing the linear relationship between variables, it was found that trade openness had significant positive effects on the economic growth in all samples and high income countries, and it was confirmed that income inequality was alleviated. Additionally, as results of examining the nonlinear relationship, a significant inverse U-shaped relationship was derived between trade openness and economic growth in middle and low income countries, and it was confirmed that the relationship between trade openness and income inequality showed a statistically significant U-shaped relationship. . These results can be said to support that trade openness not only has positive effects on economic growth, but also works as a factor in alleviating income inequality. However, the non-linear relationship between trade openness and income inequality shows the possibility that income inequality may worsen if trade openness exceeds a certain level. However, since the effect of trade openness on income inequality has not been theoretically established, it is difficult to view the results of this study as a definitive causal relationship.

본 연구는 49개 국가를 대상으로 2011년부터 2018년까지의 데이터를 사용하여 대외개방도와 소득불평등의 관계를 실증적으로 분 석하였다. 소득불평등은 경제성장에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 요인이라고 하기는 어렵지만 실증연구를 통해 경제성장에 부정적인 영 향을 미치는 것으로 분석되어 왔다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 대외개방도와 소득불평등의 관계뿐만 아니라 소득불평등과 경제성장의 관 계를 동시에 반영하기 위해 경제성장과 소득불평등에 대한 패널 연립방정식 모형을 사용하였다. 분석결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 우선 변수 간 선형관계를 분석한 결과에 의하면 대외개방도는 전체 샘플과 고소득 국가에서 경 제성장률과 유의한 양(+)의 관계를 갖는 것으로 나타났으며, 소득불평등을 완화시키는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 추가적으로 비선형관 계를 살펴본 결과에 의하면 중간 및 저소득 국가에서 대외개방도와 경제성장률 사이에 유의한 역U자형 관계가 도출되었으며, 대외개 방도와 소득불평등의 관계는 통계적으로 유의한 U자형을 보이는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 대외개방도가 경제성장률에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 뿐만 아니라 소득불평등을 완화하는 요인으로 작용한다는 것을 지지해준다고 할 수 있다. 하지만 대외개방도와 소득불평등 사이의 비선형 관계는 대외개방도가 일정한 수준을 넘어서면 소득불평등을 심화시킬 수도 있다는 가능성을 보여준다. 하 지만 대외개방도가 소득불평등에 미치는 영향이 이론적으로 확립되지 않았기 때문에 본 연구의 결과를 확정적 인과관계로 보기는 어 려우며 지속적인 연구를 통해 규명해나가야 할 것이다.
