Many studies in advanced countries have claimed that bilingualism has a positive effect on the academic achievement of immigrant students. Although recent scholarship in South Korea has pay attention to the benefits of bilingualism, scant research has been done on the causal relationship between bilingualism and academic achievement. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of bilingual ability of multi-cultural adolescents on their academic achievement, employing the data of Multi-Cultural Adolescents Panel Study(MAPS) that surveyed 1,147 high school students. The continued studies demonstrating the benefits of bilingualism should be carried out to draw policy attention to bilingual education for multi-cultural adolescents.

많은 해외연구들에서 이중언어 구사능력이 이민가정 청소년들의 학업성취도에 긍정적인 영향을 가져온다는 결 과들이 지속적으로 제시되고 있다. 최근 국내에서도 다문화 청소년의 이중언어 구사능력의 영향 연구에 관한 관 심이 고조됨에 따라 다양한 연구결과들이 제시되고 있다. 그러나 다문화가정 청소년의 이중언어 구사능력이 학 업성취도에 미치는 영향에 대한 실증연구는 아직 부족한 상황이다. 본 연구는 다문화청소년을 위한 이중언어교 육에 대한 정책적 관심이 되살아나고 다문화교육 현장에서의 이중언어교육에 대한 수요가 국민적 공감을 얻기 위해서는 다문화청소년들의 이중언어사용이 실질적인 성과를 이끌어내고 있음을 보여주는 연구가 많이 필요할 것이라는 생각에서 수행되었다. 이에 따라 청소년들이 학교에서 거둘 수 있는 일반적인 성과라는 측면에서 학업 성취도에 주목하였으며, ‘다문화청소년 패널조사(MAPS)’ 데이터를 활용하여 다문화청소년들을 대상으로 이중 언어 구사능력이 학업성취도에 미치는 영향에 대해 살펴보고자 한다.
