Reproving the pettyness of early Analytic Philosophy, Jonathan Schaffer argues that priority monism is right. He says that the real contention of the idealistic monist of the past was to insist on priority monism, not existential monism. The latter says that there is only one thing that exists. The former says that many exist, but among many, the whole prevails. Schaffer's conceptual point is relatively uncontroversial. The two kinds of monism are different. But we had this conceptual distinction early on. The traditional name for primacy monism, which insists that the whole takes precedence over the parts, is “holism”. What he has done is merely a semantic proposal to call “holism” “priority monism”. Therefore, his claims about the history of philosophy, especially the early days of analytical philosophy, are difficult to accurately diagnose historical issues. Moore and Russell criticized holism and, in Schaffer’s words, advocated priority pluralism. In particular, if we pay attention to the distinction between existence and reality, it is more difficult to establish Schaffer's argument about history of philosophy. Furthermore, in addition to the conceptual controversies above, it is also debatable whether Schaffer's argument in favor of primacy of whole is a successful argument. It will be argued here that several key arguments entangled with conceptual issues are far from successful.
