How has Coronavirus been affecting Japanese folk music traditions? And what will ethnomusicological research look like in the age of the New Normal? Since the virus’s identification and a series of governmental responses beginning in 2020, our lifestyles have undergone significant transformation. While the epidemic itself causes no structural damage - unlike natural disasters - resulting economic, social and cultural landscape illustrates that people can no longer enjoy experiencing folk music traditions as they did before. Concomitantly, the pandemic has necessitated cataclysmic changes within our ethnomusicological ‘field’ and research methods. Travel restrictions and lockdowns have been forcing many to investigate far away from the locations of our research topics. However, the evaporation of direct interaction has not only encouraged locals to use the internet to promote and provide new ways of experiencing their culture, but also diversified the methods of conducting fieldwork. In this paper, I present findings from my project and some thoughts regarding online research. I begin by analysing the impact of Coronavirus on Japanese folk music traditions, putting forward findings from my online fieldwork. Next, I examine the difference between real-life and virtual ethnographic investigation, exploring the potentialities and challenges of online-oriented research based on my experiences. Lastly, I discuss the future of ethnomusicological research in the New Normal, introducing several perspectives relating to the intrinsic nature of our scholarship. Ultimately, I aim to demonstrate the potential benefits of online research, while warning of the disadvantages of over-reliance on the virtual ‘field’.

코로나바이러스는 일본 민속음악 전통에 어떻게 영향을 끼치고 있을까? 또 “뉴노 멀”의 시대에 민족음악학적 연구는 어떤 모습이 될까? 2020년 바이러스가 나타나고 일련의 국가적 대처들이 생겨나면서 우리 삶의 모습은 크게 변화하여 왔다. 자연재 해와는 달리 감염 자체는 구조적 파괴를 야기하지는 않지만, 경제, 사회 및 문화적 경관은 이제 사람들이 이전처럼 민속음악 전통을 겪을 수 없음을 보여준다. 더하여 감염병은 우리의 민족음악학적 ‘장’과 연구 방법에 있어서의 급속한 변화를 요구하 게 되었다. 이동의 제한과 락다운은 많은 이들로 하여금 우리가 우리 연구 주제의 현장으로부터 떨어지게 만들었다. 그러나 직접적 상호작용의 결여는 타 문화를 경험 하는 새로운 방식을 발전시키고 제공하는 인터넷을 사용케 할 뿐 아니라, 현지조사 수행의 기술을 다양화시켰다. 이 연구는 스스로의 프로젝트에서 찾아낸 발견 및 온라인 연구에 관한 사유를 드러 낸다. 나 자신의 온라인 현지조사에서 찾아낸 것들을 통해 일본 민속음악 전통에 대한 코로나바이러스의 영향을 분석하였다. 이어, 실제 삶과 가상 민족지적 탐구 사이의 차이를, 경험에 입각한 온라인 지향 연구의 가능성과 어려움을 탐구함으로써 살폈다. 마지막으로 우리 학제의 본질과 관련된 여러 시각들을 소개하면서 “뉴노멀”에서의 민족음악학적 탐구의 미래를 논하였다. 궁극적으로, 나는 가상의 장에 관한 과도한 의존의 단점을 경고하면서도 온라인 연구의 가능한 이점을 보여주고자 하였다.
