Ethnomusicologists investigate the various musical cultures of the world. The globalization that has swept the world since the late twentieth century has defined and extended musical cultures and music industry globalization as “normal” and the foundation and condition of musical practices. However, uncertainty reigned as COVID-19 brought crisis to musicians’ lives, musical cultures, and music industries worldwide. Subsequent to various attempts at overcoming this disaster in a short period of time, musical cultures entered the world of a “new normal.” Physical restrictions and social distancing were deathblows to not only musicians’ lives but also international exchange and performance tours. Responses to restoration delivered newly-arisen practices including live online performance, YouTube videos, technology-based concerts, and new distribution platforms. During this process, changes in the production and consumption of music including a flood of concert contents, expansion of concert and online concert technology foundations, and the influx of new audiences have been witnessed. Moreover, COVID-19 truly presented an opportunity to reveal and even heighten the inequality of music cultures around the world, contingent on locale, generation, class, and musical genre. In relation to COVID-19, issues including de-globalization, a retun to nationalism, and a new phase of globalization have arisen in the fields of sociology, political science, and economics. It is also crucial to discuss issues of globalization in relation to musical cultures and the changes caused by COVID-19. In this way, using examples of musical expreinces and practices in Asian music during the COVID-19 period, this paper will discuss the current issues of post-globalization and the responsibilities of contemporary musicologists.

음악인류학의 연구대상은 전 세계의 음악문화이다. 지난 20세기 후반을 휩쓴 “지 구화”는 전 세계 음악실천의 “노멀”로 음악문화와 음악산업을 규정하고 확장해 온 근간이자 조건이었다. 그러나 2020년 예상치 못하게 등장한 코로나 19 팬데믹은 음악 문화와 음악산업에 큰 위기를 가져왔으며 이를 극복하고자 하는 여러 시도들로 매우 짧은 기간 안에 음악문화는 이전에 경험하지 못한 “뉴노멀”의 세계 안으로 진입하였다. 물리적 이동의 제한과 거리두기는 예술가들의 삶뿐 아니라 국제 교류와 공연 유통에 치명적 타격을 주었다. 단절을 극복하기 위한 대응으로 온라인 기반의 영상 스트리밍, 기술혁신 활용의 공연, 새로운 유통 플랫폼 등이 등장하고 그 과정에 서 공연 콘텐츠의 범람, 기술기반의 확장, 새로운 팬덤의 유입 등 음악의 생산과 소비의 새로운 변화도 감지되었다. 무엇보다 지역 간, 계층 간, 장르 간 음악 문화의 불평등이 심화되거나 드러나는 계기가 되었다. 코로나 19 시기 사회, 경제, 정치 분야에서 탈지구화와 국가주의로의 환원, 새로운 지구화 국면 등의 논제가 중요하게 대두되고 있어 코로나가 촉발한 음악변화와 관련 하여 음악 연구에서도 지구화의 논제들은 중요하게 논의될 필요가 있다. 이에 이 연구는 코로나 시기 아시아 음악 실천과 경험의 사례를 중심에 놓고 현재 진행 중인 포스트 지구화의 논제들을 논의하고 포스트 지구화 시대 동시대 음악학자들에게 주어진 과제를 제언으로 마무리한다.
