This paper examines various aspects of changes related to the field of music which have occurred since the onset of the global COVID-19 epidemic, through master’s and doctoral thesis published in the United States from 2020 to the spring semeter of 2021. Three semesters have passed since the outbreak of the epidemic, and not many academic papers have yet been published in which the connection between the field of music and COVID-19 is clearly delineated. In the case of degree theses, however, a search for “COVID-19,” “music,” and “ethnomusicology” through a degree thesis web search engine returned 16 theses that dealt directly or indirectly with the effects of the virus. Some made the impact of COVID-19 a direct topic of papers. In some other cases, new phenomena caused by COVID-19 were included as a part of the papers. In one instance, a student about to perform a graduation recital was unable to perform before a live audience and wrote a thesis on the process of producing the graduation recital as a digital sound recording. Elsewhere, there are theses on the difficulties of virtual music teaching, particularly of vocal and instrumental music, where in-person lessons are essential, and also theses discussing the impact of COVID-19 on autonomous music communities outside of schools. In this paper, the 16-degree theses are classified into five categories for discussion: music education, graduation performance, music educators and therapy, performing arts, and community music. I’ll first talk about ideas I got from papers in each group. I’ve tried to come up with generic ideas they share in common; however, sometimes, by necessity, I’ll zoom in on a particular paper. In the section under the name of “Perspectives of the Music Field in the New Era,” I will discuss four issues—digital divide, immediacy or on-the spotness of the performance, changes in the essential characteristics of each music culture, the question of morals in doing music—that have been collectively gleaned from the previous sections.

이 글은 전 지구적 전염병인 코로나19 유행 이후 발생한 음악 분야와 관련된 변화의 다양한 양상을 2020에서 2021년 봄학기까지 미국에서 발표된 석사와 박사학위 논문을 통해 살펴본다. 코로나19 발생 이후 음악 분야와 관련된 변화 상황이 국내에서 논문을 통해서 발표되고 있으나 해외의 상황을 살피는 경우는 발견되지 않고 있다. 해외의 경우 일반적으로 학술지 논문보다 학위 논문을 통해 훨씬 빠르게 현재적 상황을 보여주는 글을 접할 수 있다. 이 글을 위해 미국 학위논문 검색 사이트인 프로퀘스트(ProQuest)에서 “COVID-19”, “music”, “ethnomusicology”, “new normal” 을 중심어로 하여 코로나19의 영향력을 반영한 학위논문을 검색하였다. 그 결과 16개의 논문이 코로나19의 음악 분야에 관한 직접적 영향력을 서술하며 논문 전체의 주제로 삼거나, 논문 일부에 서 다루고 있음을 확인하였다. 졸업 연주를 앞두고 있던 학생이 코로나19로 인하여 대면 연주가 불가능하게 됨에 따라 졸업 연주를 영상으로 제작하고 그 과정을 논문으로 작성하거나, 공동체 음악을 연행하는 단체가 가상 모임으로 옮겨가며 겪게 된 변화들과 같이 다양한 주제가 포함된다. 이 글에서는 16개의 논문을 음악교육(Music Education), 졸업연주(Graduation Performance), 음 악교육자와 음악치료(Music Educators and Therapy), 공연예술(Performing Arts), 공동체 음악 (Community Music)의 다섯 개의 주제로 나누어 분야별로 공통적인 부분을 논의하였으며, 필요한 경우 한 논문을 주목하여 살펴보기도 하였다. 이 글의 셋째 부분인 “뉴노멀 시대의 음악 분야에 대한 조망”에서는 코로나19 이후 변화된 음악 분야에서 생각해 보아야 할 문제로 디지털 격차 (digital divide), 공연의 현장성, 각 음악문화 고유의 본질적 특성의 변화, 음악하기의 윤리성 문제 라는 네 가지 측면을 논의하였다.
