This essay explores the worship of Buddha relics in early medieval Japan focusing on its cultural development and the ideological foundation. The central discussion of the essay is twofold: a) to illustrate the Buddhist ”economic“ logic that motivated the worship of Buddha relics by various groups and individuals for their own ideals and purposes; b) to examine the discourse and expansion of the narrative on the value and meaning of Buddha relics developed in medieval Buddhist culture in Japan. After briefly discussing the original meaning of Buddha relics and their distributions throughout East Asia, the essay discusses the ways in which rituals and culture of Buddha relics worship developed in early medieval Japan. Finally, it closely looks at the multi󰠏layered aspects and transformations in interpretations of Buddha relics by Japanese esoteric Buddhist monks; and in relation to that, secret transmissions on original enlightenment among esoteric Buddhist monks and the mutually associated discourses of Buddha relics, wish󰠏fulfilling jewels, and the symbols of dragon and serpent are probed in detail. To this end, the essay examines Keiran shūyōshū, a medieval Tendai Buddhist commentary that faithfully records the medieval hermeneutic discourses and transmissions of Japanese esoteric Buddhism.

이 논문은 중세 일본의 사리 신앙을 둘러싼 문화와 그 사상적 토대를 고찰한다. 특히 다양한 집단과 개인이 저마다의 동기와 목적으로 사리를 숭배하며 가치가 높은 ‘교환’의 대상으로 간주했던 경제적 논리와, 중세 일본의 불교 문화 속에서 전개된 사리의 가치와 의미에 대한 담론과 서사의 확장을 살펴보고자 한다. 먼저 사리의 본래 의미와 인도에서부터 동아시아에 사리가 이동･유통되며 그에 대한 신앙의 문화가 형성되는 과정을 간략히 살펴보고, 이어서 일본에서의 사리의 유통과 중세 사리 숭배의 문화와 의례가 다양한 양상으로 발전하는 모습을 고찰한다. 마지막으로 이러한 사리신앙의 문화 속에서 두드러지는 사리의 신성한 의미와 가치에 대한 해석의 다층적 면모와 변화, 특히 중세 일본의 사리숭배를 중심으로 한 종교문화에 있어서 그러한 해석의 핵심적 토대를 이루는 일본 밀교의 사상과 본각(本覺)의 비의적 논의를 바탕으로 한 사리의 해석학적 담론을 면밀히 탐구한다. 이를 위해서 특히 이러한 밀교적 해석학이 잘 드러나 있는 문헌이자, 중세 천태의 교학적 담론과 전수내용을 충실히 기록한 『계람습엽집(渓嵐拾葉集)』에 나타난 사리와 여의보주에 대한 해석적 논의들을 살펴볼 것이다.
