　This paper analyzes the causal relation between unemployment and crime occurrence of major crime types in Korea using time series methodology. Annual data from 1990 to 2020 are used to study the effect of unemployment on crime rates of violent crime, theft crime, assault crime, and intelligence crime. Granger causality test finds that a significant causality running from unemployment to theft, assault and intelligence crime rates. Cointegration tests show that there is a stable equilibrium relation between unemployment rate and theft, assault and intelligence crime rates. Estimation result of the cointegrating equations show unemployment rate has a significant positive effect on theft, assault and intelligence crime rates. When unemployment rate rose by 1%, theft, intelligence and assault crime rates rose by 12.7%, 1.5%, 0.3% respectively. Empirical results of this paper suggest that a rising unemployment rate would have significant effect on theft and intelligence crime occurrence in Korea.

본 연구의 목적은 시계열 분석기법을 활용하여 실업률과 주요 범죄유형별 범죄 발생률 사이의 인과관 계를 살펴보고, 실업이 주요 범죄유형별 범죄 발생률에 미치는 영향을 분석하는데 있다. 1990년부터 2020년까지의 비교적 장기간에 걸친 국내 시계열 자료를 활용하였으며, 실업률 외에 범죄 발생률에 영향 을 미칠 수 있는 통제변수로 국내총생산(GDP)을 사용하였다. 경찰청의 범죄 분류 방식에 따라 범죄 유형을 강력범죄, 절도범죄, 폭력범죄, 지능범죄로 구분하여 각 죄종별로 범죄 발생률을 산출하였다. 실업률과 범죄유형별 범죄 발생률 간의 인과관계를 파악하기 위하여 실시한 Granger 인과성 검정 결과, 실업률은 절도, 폭력 및 지능 범죄 발생률과 유의한 인과관계가 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. 실업률과 유의한 인과관계가 존재하는 절도, 폭력 및 지능 범죄 발생률과 실업률 사이에 안정적인 균형 관계가 성립하는지 검토하기 위하여 실시한 공적분 검정에서는 실업률과 절도, 폭력, 지능 범죄 발생률 간에 공적분 관계가 성립하는 것으로 분석되었다. 공적분 관계식을 추정한 결과, 실업률은 절도, 지능 및 폭력 범죄 발생률에 유의한 영향을 미쳤으며, 실업률이 1% 상승하면 절도, 지능 및 폭력 범죄 발생률은 각각 12.7%, 1.5%, 0.3% 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 분석 결과는 실업률이 강력범죄 발생에는 영향을 주지 않지만, 재산범죄에 해당하는 절도 및 지능 범죄 발생에 유의한 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 시사한다
