Seymour Martin Lipset developed his concept “extremism of the centre” based on his analysis of the voting behaviour of different classes in the Weimar Republic. He assumed a connection between class and political behaviour, especially voting, and claimed that for each position on the political continuum – left, right, and centre – there is a potential democratic and an extremist version. With the recent rise of radical right populism in Germany, the question emerged whether Lipset’s thesis can be applied to this political phenomenon. This study gives an account of Lipset’s theory and also of the losers of modernization thesis, which was first introduced by Hans-Georg Betz and can be seen as a variation of Lipset’s approach. It explores whether and how far these two theoretical approaches have any explanatory power for the emergence of radical right populism in Germany. Lipset’s thesis could not be verified based on the analysis of voting behaviour. Overall, the evidence supports the losers of modernization thesis more strongly than the extremism of the centre theory. Radical right populism appears to be more a reaction to fears of future losses and social downward mobility than a phenomenon that could be attributed to an extremism of the centre.
