Factors of High Risk Drinking of Male and Female Employees

Purpose : This study is to contribute to make measures to reduce the occurrence of high-risk drinking in the company by examining characteristics of high-risk drinkers by genders of workers in Korea and analyzing the factors affecting high-risk drinking. Methods : The subjects of the study were 1,562 employees excluding non-drinkers among 8,958 subjects for health survey by using the first year of the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from January to December 2010. Results : Men’s high-risk drinking rate was 25.6% and women’s high-risk drinking rate was 7.8%. Factors affecting high-risk drinking for men had significant relevance based on BMI, smoking, walking, moderate exercise. Factors affecting high-risk drinking for women had significant relevance based on marital status, income level, BMI, smoking. Conclusion : Based on the above results, in order to manage men’s high-risk drinking, drinking management strategy needs to be established considering BMI, smoking, medium exercise. In order to manage women’s high-risk drinking, drinking management strategy in the company needs to be established considering marital status, income level, BMI, smoking and the appropriate intervention program also needs to be applied.
