It’s the global era. Now, it is an era of contemplating problems at the global level beyond regional limitations. In this era, religion is not a matter of geopolitical religion in a narrow area, but of religion at the global level. This perspective is called a ‘global approach’ and a ‘global perspective’. The meaning of the method approached from this perspective is to understand religion beyond the framework of modern Western paradigm. In this context, this paper attempts to analyze the understanding of Korean religion viewed by early missionaries. The characteristics of Korean religion viewed by early missionaries in the late 19th century can be defined as the absence of religion. However, rather, such characteristics can be the basis for understanding the religious characteristics of Korea in the global era.

글로벌 시대이다. 이제 지역적 한계를 뛰어넘어 전 지구적인 차 원에서 문제를 고민하는 시대이다. 이런 시대에 종교는 좁은 영역 의 지정학적 종교의 문제가 아니라 지구적 차원의 종교의 문제를 고민한다. 이런 시각을 ‘지구적 접근’(global approach), ‘지구적 관점’(global perspective)이라 한다. 이러한 시각에서 접근하는 방법의 의미는 근대 서구의 인식틀을 넘어서 종교를 이해하려는 것이다. 본 논문은 이런 맥락에서 초기 선교사들이 바라본 한국 종교 이해를 분석하려고 한다. 19세기 말이라는 초기 선교사들이 바라본 한국의 종교의 특성은 종교의 부재라고 정의될 수 있다. 하지만 오 히려 그러한 특성이 글로벌 시대에서 한국의 종교적 특성을 새롭게 파악할 수 있는 근거가 될 수 있다.
