In this paper I chronologically outlined the marriage of Buddhist monks in Japan, focusing on both Buddhist precepts and secular laws. As it is well known, the marriage of Buddhist monks is very common in modern Japan. I don’t know exactly how Korean Buddhists perceive this, but I presume that many of them have more or less a corrupt image toward Japanese Buddhist monks. I think that their perception is half correct. In Japan, the marriage of Buddhist monks was quite common in all ages, from ancient times to the early modern period(Edo period), although it is against Buddhist precepts and secular laws. It is no wonder that this history is reflected in the current state of Japanese Buddhist society. However, we should consider another factor affecting the current state of Japanese Buddhist society. The 19th and 20th centuries were difficult times for Buddhism all around the world. The same is true for Japanese Buddhist society. After the Meiji Restoration, as modern values became more influential, the concept of religion modeled on Protestantism became widespread among people, including Buddhist monks. This has led the Japanese Buddhist society to allow Buddhist monks to marry, which is one of the reasons why monks’ marriages have become commonplace. The main purpose of this paper is to show the two factors affecting the current state of the Japanese Buddhist society.

본 논문은 일본 승려들의 대처의 역사에 대해 계율과 법령 두 가지에 주목하여 개략적 으로 고찰한 것이다. 잘 알려진 것처럼, 현대 일본에서는 승려들의 대처가 매우 일반적이다. 이에 대해 한국의 불교도가 어떻게 생각하고 있는지 논자는 정확하게 파악하고 있지는 않지만, 그 중 많은 사람들은 일본의 불교계에 대해 타락한 이미지를 어느 정도 가지고 있지는 않을 까? 아마도 그것은 절반은 맞는 말일 것이다. 일본에서는 고대에서 근세에 이르기까지 시대를 불문하고 대처가 일반화되어 있었다. 그 역사가 일본 불교계의 현상現狀에 반영 되어 있는 것은 확실할 것이다. 그러나 이것만으로 일본 불교계의 현재의 상황을 말하는 것은 옳지 않다고 생각된다. 19세기와 20세기는 불교계에게는 수난의 세기였는데, 그것은 일본 불교도 마차가지였 다. 일본은 메이지 유신[明治維新] 이후, 근대의 가치관이 사회에 침투하여 개신교를 모델로 한 종교개념이 확산되었다. 이것이 재가주의在家主義 불교라는 모습으로 일본 불교계를 움직이게 했는데, 이는 일본에서 대처가 일반화된 하나의 요인이 되었다. 본 논문은 일본 불교의 대처에 대한 이 두 가지 배경을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한 것이다.
