This study aimed to prepare a Korean-English Encyclopedia of Korean Culture that will contribute to building knowledge about Korea and expanding the base of Korean studies. As a primary reference material used in education academic research, an encyclopedia is a storage of basic information and general knowledge. However, while knowledge encyclopedias related to Korean culture are subdivided and compiled into specialized fields, those focused on universal knowledge are rare. Considering the diversity of domestic and foreign approaches to Korean studies, it is essential to prepare generalized basic data to increase the number of subsequent generations choosing Korean studies and public interest in the culture. This study aimed to present the theoretical paradigm, character, and principles to be internalized to create this encyclopedia. To set the direction of the knowledge about Korean culture that should be systematized, this study ensured that there is cultural essence in the historically accumulated symbolic meanings, and the systematization is consistent with the establishment of the Korean cultural tradition. Moreover, the encyclopedia should have general and core knowledge, step-by-step organization, and self-reference of synchrony and diachrony as basic characteristics. After revealing the theoretical basis and nature of the Korean–English Encyclopedia of Korean Culture, this study presented the principle of constructing the dictionary and writing the title. Korean– English Encyclopedia of Korean Culture does not materialize only by setting directions. However, this study is significant as it presented a blueprint for the basic book that will contribute to the quantitative and qualitative development of Korean studies by attempting to combine culture and humanities. Future studies should examine specific issues required in the execution of compilation.

본 연구는 한국에 관한 지식 구축에 기여하여 국내외적으로 한국학의 저변 확대에 일조할 한국문화 국영문 사전 편찬을 기획 및 예비하는 데 목표를 둔다. 교수학습뿐 아니라 학술 연구에 있어서까지 기본적으로 활용되는 참고 자료로서 ‘사전’은 기초 정보의 보고이자 범용 지식 자료이다. 그간 한국문화와 관련된 지식 사전은 특정 전문 분야로 세분되어 다수 편찬되었지만, 보편적 지식을 다룬 사전은 드물게 편찬되었다. 한국학후속세대 증가에 동기를 부여하고 한국문화에 대한 대중적 관심을 고양할 일반론적 기초자료 마련은 반드시 필요한 작업이다. 본 연구는 그와 같은 기초자료의 하나로서 한국문화 국영문 사전의 편찬을 염두에 두고, 이 사전이 기반해야 할 이론적 패러다임, 내면화해야 할 성격과 원리를큰 틀에서 제시하고자 하였다. 먼저, 한국문화를 어떤 성격의 지식으로 체계화해야 할 것인지 방향을 잡기 위해, 역사적으로 축적된 상징적 의미에 문화의 본태가 있음을 확인하고, 한국문화 지식의 체계화가 한국문화 교양의 전통 수립과 궤를 같이해야 한다고 보았다. 또한 한국문화 국영문 사전은 총론적 ․ 중핵적 지식 구성, 단계별 조직화, 통시성과 공시성을 아우른 자기참조성에 기본 성격을 두어야 할 것이다. 본 연구는 한국문화 국영문 사전의 이론적 토대와 성격을 밝힌 뒤, 집필의 원론을 마련하고자 사전의 단계별 구성 원칙과 표제어의 서술문 작성 원칙을 개괄하였다. 한국문화 국영문 사전이 방향성 설정만으로 실체화되는 것은 아니다. 그러나 본 연구는 문화와 교양과 인문의 화학적 결합을 시도하여 한국학의 양적, 질적 발전에 이바지할 기본서로서 문화사전 기획의 청사진을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의를 가지며, 편찬의 실행 속에서 요구될 구체적 탐구사안들을 향후 과제로 남긴다.
