The purpose of this study is to examine the semantic characteristics of metaphors related to women in Korean and Chinese proverbs. For this study, 205 Korean proverbs and 202 Chinese proverbs were compared and analyzed from the perspective of conceptual metaphor theory in cognitive linguistics. According to the analysis results, using objects, plants, animals, etc. as the source domains, the Korean and Chinese women’s metaphors conceptualize women around status, fate, roles, influences, abilities, appearance, age, personality, words and deeds, etc. Judging from the hierarchy of metaphors, Korean and Chinese show more cultural universalities at higher levels, and show cultural variations better at the lower levels. And Chinese tends to show higher detail with slightly more sub-metaphors than Korean. In terms of highlighted aspects, the related metaphors generally emphasize women’s disadvantageous status, passive existence, and negative aspects of mind and personality while hiding many positive aspects.

이 연구는 한국어 및 중국어 속담에 나타난 여성 은유 표현에 주목하여 여성을 규정하는 담화 기제로서 개념적 은유의 한 ․ 중 언어적 ․ 문화적 보편성과 다양성을 고찰하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 한국어 속담 205개와 중국어 속담 202개를 대상으로 인지언어학의 개념적 은유 이론의 관점에서 관련 은유를 도출하고 대조 분석하였다. 대조 분석은 구체적으로 은유의 위계 구조와 부각된 측면을 중심으로 진행하였다. 분석 결과에 의하면, 한 ․ 중 여성 은유는 사물, 식물, 동물 등을 근원영역으로 지위, 운명, 역할, 영향, 능력, 외모, 나이, 인성, 언행 등을 중심으로 여성을 개념화한다. 은유의 위계 구조로 보아, 두 언어는 높은 층위에서 일치되는 개념화 양상을 더 잘 보이고 하위로 갈수록 문화적 다양성을 더 잘 보여준다. 그리고 중국어가 한국어보다 조금더 많은 하위 은유로 더 높은 상세성을 나타내는 경향이 있다. 부각된 측면으로 보아, 관련 은유는 대체로 여성의 불리한 지위와 수동적인존재 양상 및 마음과 인성의 부정적 측면을 많이 부각시키는 동시에 긍정적인 측면을 많이 은폐하는 양상을 보인다.
