Family is a crucial factor in the study of criminal activities. A closer look at family is important in handling criminal issues, especially conflicts that arise and domestic abuse between family members. This study analyzes changes in the characteristics of Korean families, focusing on the increase of families with non-independent children and the domestic violence these children inflict on their parents. For this study, official statistic data and surveys were reviewed. Data on family and domestic violence from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, as well as counseling data conducted by the Family Court on domestic abusers, were analyzed. Surveys from 91 university students on the relationship between parents and their adult children were also analyzed in the context of family values. The main findings are as follows. First, changes in Korean families and the relationship between parents and their adult children, as well as domestic violence inflicted on parents by these adult children, were reviewed. It is predicted that as the number of houses consisting of parents and their adult children increases, conflict and violence within the family, as well as support of their elderly parents, were expected to occur as a societal issue. Second, based on official statistics, this paper presented the social background to the increase of non-independent children, the characteristics of parent-child relationships, and the status and cause of domestic abuse by these non-independent children. Third, according to the survey on parent-adult child relationships, traditional values and modern values collided while the child still maintained a high dependency on their parents. This shows the heavy burden that the parent bears and how it may result in conflict between parents and their children. Finally, this study discusses how to improve parent- child relationships as well as how society should respond to the phenomenon of adult children’s decision to stay non-independent.

범죄문제에서 가족은 결정적 요인이다. 따라서 변화하고 있는 가족을 봐야 범죄문제에 적절히 대처할 수 있는데, 가족 간에 발 생하는 갈등과 가정폭력은 특히 그렇다, 이 연구는 한국가족의 변화된 특성을 부모-비독립 성인자녀 가구의 증가현상과 성인자 녀에 의한 부모폭력 문제를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 연구를 위해 공식통계자료와 설문조사자료를 분석하였다. 공 식통계자료는 여성가족부의 가족실태조사결과와 가정폭력실태조 사결과, 그리고 가정법원으로부터 상담 위탁된 가정폭력 행위자 상담통계자료를 검토하였다. 설문조사는 대학생 91명을 대상으 로 부모-성인자녀 관계에 관한 가족가치관을 조사하였다. 주된 발견사항은 다음과 같다. 먼저 한국가족의 변화양상과 부모-성인자녀 관계 및 성인자녀 에 의한 부모폭력 문제를 검토하였다, 부모-비독립 성인자녀 가 구의 증가는 가족 간 갈등과 폭력, 노인부양 문제와 같은 사회문 제를 초래할 것으로 예측되었다. 둘째, 비독립 성인자녀 가구 발 생의 사회적 배경과 부모-성인자녀 관계의 특성, 그리고 성인자녀에 의한 부모폭력의 현황 및 원인을 공식통계 자료를 근거로 제시하였다. 셋째, 부모-성인자녀 관계에 관한 대학생들 조사결 과, 전통적 가치관과 변화된 가치관이 혼재하고 있었으며 부모에 대한 의존적 태도가 높았다, 부모세대의 부담과 부모-자녀 간 갈 등의 소지가 있음을 보여주었다. 마지막으로 이 연구는 성인자녀 의 비독립 현상에 대한 사회적 대응과 부모-자녀 간 관계개선 방안을 논의하였다.
