Scholars attempt to extend the research on criminal victimization by examining the role of self-control as a correlate of vulnerability to victimization. Several studies found that self-control can influence various types of victimization. However, prior research has only focused on general victimization or violent/property victimization, with limited attention to victimization against prisoners, and have neglected to consider sexual victimization among male prisoners in a prison setting. Given that self-control can be considered as a universal correlate of victimization, self-control may also be a factor shaping sexual victimization among male prisoners. Using a nationwide sample of 986 male prisoners, the present study models the relationship between sexual victimization, self-control, and risky lifestyle measures. Results indicated that low self-control is positively associated with the odds of sexual victimization among male prisoners despite the inclusion of other theoretically relevant variables. Theoretical and policy implications are discussed.

피해 연구들은 자기통제력이 피해 취약성을 높이는 요소로서 작용할 수 있음을 발견하였다. 그러나, 자기통제력이 교도소 수 형자의 범죄피해에 영향을 미치는지를 살펴본 연구는 초기 단계 에 있으며 특히 성폭력 피해와는 어떤 관계가 있는지에 대한 관 심은 부족하였다. 자기통제력이 피해를 설명하는 보편적인 요인 이 될 수 있음을 고려할 때, 자기통제력이 수형자의 성폭력 피해 를 설명하는 데 있어서 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다. 이를 검증하 기 위해 전국 20개 교도소 986명을 대상으로 조사한 자료를 사 용하였으며 로지스틱 회귀분석을 실시하여 수형자의 자기통제 력, 위험한 생활양식, 그리고 성폭력 피해 간의 관계를 살펴보았 다. 분석 결과 수형자의 낮은 자기통제력은 성폭력 피해경험과 유의미한 정적 관계를 갖는 것으로 나타났으며 이 영향력은 인 구사회학적 변인, 교도소 변인, 그리고 위험한 생활양식 변인을 통제한 후에도 유지되었다. 이 연구의 결과는 교도소 내 성폭력 피해에 대한 폭넓은 이해와 예방을 위해서는 자기통제력의 요소 를 고려해야 함을 시사한다.
