This paper aims to look into the characteristics of Sotdae Literature, the Korea’s first literary magazine for the disabled. Sotdae Literature, which had published 100 issues over 25 years since its foundation in 1991 until the discontinuance of the publication, opened a new genre called ‘literature of the disabled’ and was a literary cradle to discover and cultivate 160 disabled writers. But there has been no full-scale study in spite of the high status and value of Sotdae Literature. Thus, this study was conducted to examine the characteristics of Sotdae Literature focusing on the 1st issue to the 4th issue in order to serve as a starting point of future research on Sotdae Literature. In Chapter 2, this paper paid attention to the foundation background and meaning of Sotdae Literature. It was found that Sotdae Literature was the Korea’s first literary magazine for the disabled which was published and edited by disabled writers and was established to provide papers for the disabled to release their works, cultivate disabled writers, and build a ground of discourse for improving national disability awareness. In Chapter 3, this paper considered the organization and characteristics of Sotdae Literature through a comparison between the first issue and the second issue. The study result displayed that the ‘special column’ was specialized as a ground of discourse for improving disability awareness, while the ‘literary column’ opened a ground of literature to provide papers for the disabled to release their works and cultivate disabled writers. This paper has significance by examining the characteristics and organization of Sotdae Literature as a literary magazine for the disabled for the first time.

이 논문은 우리나라 최초의 장애인 문학잡지 『솟대문학』의 성격을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 1991년에 창간되어 2015년에 폐간되기까지 25년 동안 통 권 100호를 발행해온 『솟대문학』은 그동안 장애인문학이라는 새로운 장르를 개 척해왔으며, 그동안 160명의 장애인 문인을 발굴‧양성해온 문학적 산실이었다. 그러나 한국 최초의 장애인 문학잡지로서 소수자문학의 새로운 지평을 열었던 『솟대문학』의 위상과 가치에도 불구하고 아직 본격적인 연구는 이루어지지 않 았다. 이에 본고는 앞으로 진행될 『솟대문학』 연구의 시발점으로 삼기 위해 우선 1~4호를 중심으로 『솟대문학』의 성격을 규명하고자 한다. 2장에서는 『솟대문학』의 창간 배경과 의미를 주목하였다. 연구 결과 『솟대문 학』은 장애인 문인이 주체가 되어 발행‧편집한 한국 최초의 장애인 문학잡지이 며, 장애인에게 작품 발표의 지면을 제공하고 장애인 작가를 길러내기 위한 목 적과 국민의 장애인식 개선을 위한 담론의 장을 만들고자 하는 목적으로 창간 되었음을 확인했다. 3장에서는 『솟대문학』의 편제와 특징을 창간호와 2호의 비 교‧분석을 통해 고찰하였다. 연구 결과 ‘문예란’이 장애인에게 작품 발표의 지면 을 제공하고 장애인 작가를 길러내기 위한 문학의 장을 열어주었다면, ‘특집’은 장애인식 개선을 위한 담론의 장으로 특화되었음을 확인했다. 장애인 문학잡지 로서 『솟대문학』의 성격과 편제의 특성을 최초로 규명한 것은 본고의 의의이다.
