This study examines various types of son-in-law, who are usually major characters in Korean novels, yet are relatively less highlighted than mothers, by focussing on Walwolhoemaengyeon. Scenes depicting the process of preparation for an offspring’s wedding were selected to unravel and focus on the characters of sons-in-law, not husbands or men. In Walwolhoemaengyeon, the images of sons-in-law shown through such scenes include a son-in-law who is disappointed by intended exclusion by his family, a son-in-law who forces his faith regardless of the offspring’s opinion, a son-in-law who loses his mind due to his love toward the offspring, a son-in-law who intends to fulfill his deficits through the wedding, and a son-in-law who is helpless between love toward offspring and respect for his stepmother. These images expressed in the process of preparation for offspring’s wedding display the paternal love with various complicated conditions to suggest or seek the ideal image of a public son-in-law, rather than a personal son-in-law. Next, the wedding of offspring is a rite of passage to ‘become a son-in-law.’ In this process, they can prove their qualities as son-in-law and achieve growth as fathers. Finally, the paternal authority that is relatively firm in all other situations cracks in these scenes to expose the true characters of these sons-in-law with no tailoring.

본고는 국문장편소설 『완월회맹연』 속 다양한 사위 유형을 처가와의 관계를 중심으로 살펴보고 이것이 지니는 의미에 대해 진단해 보고자 했다. 『완월회맹연』 속 사위 유형은 처가에 친화적인 유형, 처가에 일정한 거리를 두는 유형, 처가와 반목하는 유형으로 나눠볼 수 있다. 이들 다양 한 사위 유형 속 사위 존재가 지니는 의미는 첫째, ‘남성의 또 다른 통과 의례, 사위 되기’이다. 곧 ‘며느리 되기’ 못지않게 ‘사위 되기’ 역시 어렵다 는 것을 보여주면서 특히 남성의 경우 ‘사위 되기’가 완전한 가장으로 성 장하는 일종의 통과의례의 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 나아가 주독자층 인 상층 여성들에게는 사위로서의 남편에 대한 이해와 공감의 자리를 마 련해 준다고 할 수 있다. 둘째는 ‘처가와의 유대를 전제로 한 본가 중심 부부생활 지향’이다. 다양한 사위 유형 속에서 두드러지는 친정행 서사는, 본가 중심의 결혼 생활과 아들이 아닌 ‘반자(半子)’로서의 사위 존재라는 변화된 현실을 반영하면서도, 중심 가문 딸들의 모습을 통해 여전히 친정 과 긴밀한 관계를 유지하고 싶은 딸로서의 여성 독자의 소망을 절충적으 로 결구하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 마지막은 ‘이상적 사위 담론 형성’이다. 다양한 사위 유형 속 여섯 사위 중에서 조세창은 단연 최고의 사위로 평 가받는데, 그가 보여주는 처가와의 관계 속 이상적인 사위의 모습은 당대 상층 가문이 이상시하는 사위 담론을 형성하고 있다.
