Social interests in protecting the animals and environment have been increasing as the ethical recognition of people grows in recent days. As such, vegan, which has been only limited to the food categories, also appears in various domains such as fashion, beauty, and daily necessities. In the fashion industry, although the vegan is currently used with a broad meaning that considers the environmental factors, beyond the furs and leathers of animals, there is still a lack of awareness or design research on vegan leathers. Thus, this study has significance in that it not only identifies the awareness of people and the current status regarding vegan fashion but also suggests the fundamental data, which can assist the development of clothing design to protect the environment, based on the client survey in order for the vegan fashion to be efficiently commercialized. This study recruited 28 women in their 20s~30s as participants and conducted interviews in either face-to-face or untact manner. On top of that, this study conducted an interview with three leather experts on the issues to consider when employing cactus leathers. The main research results are as follows. First, 75.0% of the participants responded that they were interested in vegan fashion, and 10.7% of them have known about the vegan leather. The characteristics of participants were categorized as environmental protection types, animal protection types, sustainable fashion types, and indifferent types. Second, the participants considered durability as the most important when purchasing cactus leather products, followed by shape retention, manageability, practicality, lightweight, and functionality. Third, regarding the design preferences in fashion products with cactus leathers, outerwear was the most preferred among the item types, and a trench coat was the most preferred among them. The other preferred design aspects were the black color, X silhouette, midi length, flat collar, button closure, sleeves with buckles and cuffs, and seam pockets. Fourth, considering experts’ interview results, when fabricating products with cactus leathers, it is necessary to pay attention to the fire heat and the cactus leather is stretchy, so it is suggested attaching the reinforcing tapes before sewing. Based on the findings, five trench coat designs using cactus leather were developed. The designs were produced as virtual prototypes with a CLO software program, and the most preferred design was fabricated. This study is expected to help commercialize sustainable clothing products using vegan leather and ultimately help protect the environment and animals.

오늘날 사회 전반에 걸쳐 윤리 의식이 높아지면서 동물 보호와 환경 보호에 대한 사회적 관심도 함께 높아졌다. 이에 음식 분야에만 한정되어 있던 비건 양식은 패션, 뷰티, 생필품 등의 분야에까지 나타나고 있다. 특히 패션 분야에서의 관심이 높아지고 있으나, 비건 패션에 대한 인식과 관련 제품 디자인 개발을 위한 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 이에 본 연구는 사용자 조사를 기반으로 비건 가죽을 활용한 의류 디자인을 개발하고 의류 제품을 제작함으로써, 지속가능한 의류 디자인 개발에 도움이 되는 자료를 구축하고자 하였 다. 연구 대상자는 28명의 20~30대 여성을 대상으로 대면 및 비대면 인터뷰를 하였고, 세 명의 가죽 전문가 들을 대상으로 선인장 가죽 사용 시 고려해야 할 사항들에 대해 인터뷰하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구 대상자 중 75.0%가 비건 패션에 관심이 있다고 언급했으며, 이들 중 비건 가죽을 알고 있 는 연구 대상자는 10.7%로 나타났다. 상위 키워드들을 분류한 결과 이들은 환경 보호 유형, 동물 보호 유 형, 지속가능한 패션 유형, 무관심 유형으로 나타났다. 둘째, 연구 대상자들은 선인장 가죽 제품 구매 시 내 구성을 가장 중요하게 고려했으며, 그다음으로는 형태 유지성, 관리성, 실용성, 경량성, 기능성 순이었다. 셋째, 선인장 가죽 패션 제품에 대한 디자인 선호도 분석 결과, 아이템 종류 중 아우터가 가장 선호되었고, 그중 트렌치코트에 대한 선호도가 높았다. 색상은 블랙, 실루엣은 X라인, 총 기장은 미디 기장, 플랫 칼라 와 단추 여밈, 소매 디테일은 버클과 커프스, 포켓은 심 포켓으로 나타났다. 넷째, 전문가 인터뷰 결과, 선 인장 가죽으로 제품 제작 시 화기에 유의해야 하고 선인장 가죽에는 약간의 신축성이 있어 보강 테이프를 부착한 후 봉제하여 밀림을 방지해주는 등의 작업이 필요한 것으로 나타났다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로 선인 장 가죽을 활용한 패션 제품 디자인 다섯 가지를 개발하였다. 디자인은 클로 프로그램으로 가상 시작품을 제작하였고, 그중 한 디자인이 실물로 제작되었다. 본 연구로 비건 가죽을 활용한 지속가능한 의류 제품 상용화와 궁극적으로 환경과 동물 보호에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.
