This study began with the perception on what the field of culture and arts is. At first thought, the word “field” reminds of a specific place or situation, but it reflects a subjective world of the person who uses it. That much, it is a polysemantic concept, so there can be communication-related conflicts or arguments if the meaning is interpreted differently. A few conditions that can infer the characteristics of this word were discovered while considering its concept, which are ① place and situation, ② identity and consciousness, ③ sign (that reflects reality). Based on the conditions above, the investigator identified the types and characteristics of the perception that the participants of the field of culture and arts have by using Q method. With a total of 30 statements and 37 P-samples, the types of perception were categorized into four, and the difference in perception on the field of culture and arts by type was analyzed. The drawn result was the sign that represents specific activities, aggregation of the will for action among the participants, and reality of the profession, revealing that there were common and different parts of perception on the field depending on the role of the participants. Many say that what matters is the field, but in fact, few studies have investigated its inner side. Hopefully, this study will contribute to creating opportunities to ask lots of questions regarding the field and participate in it.

본 연구는 문화예술현장은 무엇인가라는 문제 인식에서 출발했다. 언뜻 생각할 때 현장은 구체적인 장소나 상황 을 연상시키지만, 현장이라는 단어는 사용하는 사람의 주관적인 세계를 반영한다. 그만큼 현장은 다의적인 개념이므 로 서로 현장이라는 단어를 다르게 이해할 때 여러 의사소통 갈등이나 마찰이 발생할 수 있다. 현장의 개념을 고찰하는 과정에서 현장의 특성을 유추할 수 있는 몇 가지 조건을 발견하였다. ① 장소·상황, ② 정체성·의식, ③ (현실을 반영하는) 기호가 그것이다. 연구자는 이 조건을 바탕으로 Q방법을 활용해 문화예술현장 참여자의 인식과 특성을 살펴보았다. 총 30개의 진술문과 37명의 P표본을 바탕으로 4개의 인식유형을 분류하고, 유형별로 문화예술현장에 대한 인식 차이를 분석했다. 도출된 결과는 문화예술현장 참여자 사이의 구체적 활동, 실천 의지의 집합체, 업의 현실을 나타내 는 기호로써 문화예술현장의 윤곽을 함축하고 있었으며, 참여자 역할에 따른 현장 인식의 공통점과 차이점을 드러냈다. 현장이 중요하다는 말은 많지만 정작 현장의 실상을 추적해나가는 연구는 찾아보기 어렵다. 이 연구를 계기로 앞 으로 현장에 대한 수많은 질문과 참여의 기회가 열리기를 기대한다.
