This study as research which had investigated descriptive system and contents of modern and contemporary history in the fifth Education curriculum of 『Korean History』 Textbook came up with these four features as follows. To begin with, since the Japan's history textbook controversy broke out in 1982, the public interest in history has risen up. A special feature by《CHOSUNILBO》which had raised the problem brought about ｢Compilation Criteria｣ the new textbook compilation guidelines. This study considers it a significant cause in that it led the fifth Education 『Korea History』 textbook to this feature in which the textbook is a version derived from the press and the public. Secondly, apart from the increment in the quantity, compared to how the writing staff was consisted of three~four only, the fifth 『Korean History』 has increased the number up to nine. To be specific, various use of learning materials aiming to strengthen ‘historical thinking’ which had started to be emphasized in the curriculum is believed to be an evident change. Thirdly, research tasks and learning objectives have been provided prior to minor units with relevant descriptions followed. Regarding Heungseon Daewongun(흥선 대원군) who appears immediately before the textbook discusses the modern times, his domestic and foreign activities have been separated for positive and negative evaluations, and Gapsin Coup(갑신정변) that had sought for the modern society has been heavily focused on. On the contrary, in terms of Gando(간도) and Dokdo, despite the increment in the quantity, the relevant contents have been rather decreased. Fourthly, the description of the contemporary history in the fifth 『Korean History』 has been confirmed to be emphasized both quantitatively and qualitatively. On top of that, the study discovered a few changes in how the textbook has been dealing with these terms such as Jeju 4·3 Incident(제주도4·3사 건), the Korean War, May Military Coup (5월 군사정변) and Gwangju Democratization Movement(광주민주화운동) as the textbook tries to objectively discuss North Korea as a minor item. In case of the modern history, how the fifth 『Korean History』 has been proceeding with the descriptions concentrating more on the basic class such as the farmers and the public stood out. On the other hand, in regard to the contemporary history, most of the descriptions by 『Korean history』 published in 1982 have been still borrowed. As described above, even though the fifth 『Korean History』 is a government-designated textbook, quantitative and qualitative differences from the previous textbooks are obviously observed, and this driving factor for revision of the textbook is anticipated to be the cause.

본고에서는 교육과정 개정에 따른 5차 『국사』의 근·현대사 분야의 서술 체 제와 내용을 검토한 결과 네 가지의 특징을 도출할 수 있었다. 첫째, 1982년 일본의 역사교과서 파동 이후 역사에 대한 대중적 관심은 높아졌다. 이를 다룬 『조선일보』의 특집기사는 ｢편찬준거안｣ 마련이라는 새로운 교과서 집필 기준을 이끌어냈다. 이는 5차 국정 교과서가 언론과 여론에 의해 추동된 개정 이라는 특징을 갖게 하는 중요한 요소라 할 수 있다. 둘째, 5차 『국사』는 분량의 증가와 더불어 3~4명이었던 집필진을 9명으로 확대시켰다. 특히 교육과정에서 강조하기 시작한 ‘역사적 탐구력’ 신장을 위 해 학습보조자료의 다양한 활용이 눈에 띄는 변화라 할 수 있다. 셋째, 중단원 앞에 연구과제와 학습목표를 제시하고 이에 부합하는 서술을 이어나갔다. 근대를 맞이하기 직전에 등장하는 흥선대원군은 국내외의 활동 을 양분하여 각각 긍·부정의 평가를 내렸고 근대 사회를 열망했던 갑신정변 을 비중있게 다뤘다. 반면 간도와 독도의 경우 지면확대에도 불구하고 오히 려 내용이 소략되는 모습도 보였다. 넷째, 5차 『국사』의 현대사 분야 서술은 4차 『국사』보다 양적·질적으로 중 요시 되었음이 확인된다. 특히 북한을 소항목으로 설정해 객관적으로 다루고 자 한 것과 제주도4·3사건, 6·25전쟁 및 5월 군사혁명 그리고 광주민주화운동 등 몇몇 용어의 변화를 시도하였다. 5차 『국사』는 근대사의 경우 기층 단위 즉 농민과 민중의 시각에 보다 무게 중심을 두어 서술하고 있는 점이 두드러졌다. 반면 현대사의 경우 1982년판 『국사』의 서술 내용을 거의 그대로 옮겨 쓴 부분이 적지 않다. 이처럼 5차 『국사』는 국정교과서라고 하더라도 앞선 교과서와 양적·질적 차이점이 두드러 지는 모습인데 이는 교과서 개정의 동인에서 그 이유를 찾을 수 있다고 생각한다.
