In modern times, people’s desire for a healthy lifestyle has been on the rise. To meet such needs, esthetic services have become more popular. Under these circumstances, it has been important to enhance the competence of estheticians who provide intangible services with a particular skill. This study attempted to investigate the influence of self-esteem on communication skills through empathy ability against estheticians. Specifically, it examined the effects of self-esteem on cognitive empathy, affective empathy, socio-technical empathy and investigated the improvement of communication skills which include acceptance, transfer and coordination competencies through such empathy ability. For this, a questionnaire survey was performed against a total of 302 estheticians in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do and Gangwon-do, and data were collected and analyzed. The results found the followings: Self-esteem had a statistically significant effect on empathy ability (cognitive empathy, affective empathy, socio-technical empathy). In addition, cognitive and socio-technical empathies revealed a positive influence on acceptance, transfer and coordination competencies. Among such empathy abilities, however, it was cognitive empathy which revealed no statistically significant influence on transfer competency. It is anticipated that the study results would provide implications for improving self-esteemand empathy abilitywhich are needed for estheticians to develop their communication skills.

현대인들의 아름답고 건강한 삶에 대한 욕구가 높아지면서 피부미용서비스는 대중화되었고 이러한 현상으로 전문적 기술과 함께 무형의 서비스를 제공하는 피부관리사들의 역량 강화에도 초점을 맞추고 있다. 본 연구는 피부관리사의 자아존중감이 공감능력을 통해 의사소통능 력에 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 즉, 본 연구에서는 피부관리사의 자아존중감이 인지적공감, 정서적 공감, 사회기술적 공감으로 구성된 공감능력에 영향을 미치고, 이러한 공감능력이 수용력, 전달력, 조정력을 포함한 의사소통능력을 향상시키는지 확인하고자 하였다. 이를 살펴보기 위해 설문지법을 이용하여 서울, 경기, 강원지역의 피부관리사 302명의 피부관리사들에게 데이터를 수집하고 분석하였다. 실 증분석 결과, 피부관리사의 자아존중감은 인지적 공감, 정서적 공감, 사회기술적 공감을 포함한 공감능력에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 공감능력 중 인지적 공감과 사회기술적 공감은 의사소통능력의 구성요소인 수용력, 전달력, 조정력에 긍정적인 영향을 미치 는 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 공감능력 중 정서적 공감은 의사소통능력의 구성요소인 전달력에는 긍정적인 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났 다. 본 연구의 결과는 피부관리사들의 의사소통능력을 향상시키기 위하여 필요한 자아존중감과 공감능력 함양에 관련된 시사점을 제공할 것 으로 생각된다.
