The 1993 Daejeon Expo carries a great significance in Korean society as a mega-event along with the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympic games. Nevertheless, studies focusing on the exposition from the political, social, and cultural perspectives are almost non-existent. Therefore, this study investigated how Korean society viewed the countries around the world and positioned itself based on its understanding of other nations at the Deajeon Expo with 110 countries participated. This study also looked into how the state power established the goals for Korean society and mobilized the general public after positioning the country in the global arena. In addition to the literature, video footages such as news media, documentary films, and TV dramas were analyzed in this study.

메가이벤트로서 서울 올림픽과 더불어 대전 엑스포는 한국사회에서 큰 의미가 있음에도 불구하고 정치, 사회, 문화적 측면에서 이에 주목하는 연구는 별달리 없는 상황이다. 이 연구에서는 110개국이 참가한 대전 엑스포에서 한국 사회는 세계 각국을 어떻게 인식했으며 이러한 타국에 대한 인식 속에서 한국을 어디에 위치시켰는지 알아본다. 한국의 위치설정 이후 국가권력은 한국 사회의 목표를 무엇으로 제시했으며 대중을 어떤 방식으로 동원하려 했는지도 살펴본다. 이는 문헌 자료만이 아니라 당시 뉴스방송, 기록영화, TV 드라마 등 영상 자료를 이용해 분석한다.
