North Korean defectors have a twofold position in the Korean society. They are described as a variety of words such as ‘an outlander’ who defected from North Korea, ‘a unification that comes first’. However, there is growing the number of people who are actively using one-person media, break away from minorities, and express their own thoughts freely. North Korean defectors also express themselves through media, and can create new identities. This research examined how North Korean defector’s identity recreated by , a YouTube channel was divided with a use of discourse analysis. The analysis results were as follows. Her YouTube channel was offering various contents through many stories and visual tools. However, she didn’t consider North Korea as a country to realize social integration in countries, ‘otherized’ North Korea, and exposed the desire for ‘recognition’ to be incorporated into the South Korea society. This can be described that North Korean defectors actively express themselves through a media technology, establish their own identities through the discourse that confrontation and difference are noticeable. These results indicate that the research breaks away from a normative dimension to consider them as ‘the unification that comes first’ and should approach the issue on North Korean defectors by considering them as ordinary people who show their own true colors.

탈북민은 한국 사회에서 이중적인 지위에 있다. 북한을 떠난 ‘이방인’이자, ‘먼저 온 통일’ 등 다양한 수식어로 설명된다. 하지만, 이들 중에는 1인 미디어를 적극 활용해 소 수자라는 신분에서 벗어나 자신의 생각을 자유롭게 표현하는 사람이 늘고 있다. 탈북민 또한 미디어를 통해 자아를 표현하고, 새로운 정체성을 구현할 수 있다고 보는 배경이 다. 이에 본 연구는 유튜브 채널 <놀새나라 TV>가 재현하는 탈북민의 정체성이 어떻게 분화되고 있는지 담론 분석을 통해 알아보았다. 분석결과, 탈북민 유튜브 채널은 풍부 한 이야기와 시각적 도구 등을 통해 다양한 볼거리를 제공한 것으로 확인되었다. 하지 만, 사회통합이 아닌 북한을 ‘타자화’ 하거나, 남한 사회에 편입하기 위한 ‘인정’ 욕구를 재차 펼친 것으로 드러났다. 탈북민은 미디어 기술을 활용해 자아표현을 적극 수행하면 서도, 대립과 이질성이 돋보이는 담론을 통해 자신의 정체성을 구축한 것으로 풀이할 수 있다. 이러한 결과는 탈북민을 ‘먼저 온 통일’이라는 규범적 차원에서 벗어나 개성 넘치는 일반인으로 재접근해야한다는 논의에 힘을 실어준다.
