In this research, we discuss the relationship between the severity and frequency of battle in order to analyze pattern of battles in modern warfare. Though previous studies found a particular pattern, i.e., a power-law distribution, in the casualty of armed conflict including interstate wars, intrastate wars, and terror attacks, the studies have not sufficiently explored this pattern for battles in war. Therefore, this research studies whether this pattern appears in battles occurred in an individual war, specifically the Korean War and the Vietnam War, based on the casualty data of battle. As a result, it is confirmed that the relationship between the severity and frequency of battle in war follows a power-law distribution. This phenomenon implies that the power-law distribution of battle casualties in war a scale-free pattern, which emerges through interaction among the components of system. Finally, the power-law-based analysis method for battle severity in war presented in this research can be used as a systematic approach to study the scale, frequency and timing of battle in war.

본 연구에서는 복잡해지고 있는 현대 전쟁에서 전투의 패턴을 분석하기 위하여 전투의 규모와 빈도 사이의 상관관계에 대해 논의한다. 과거 연구에 의하면 전쟁과 분쟁, 테러 등 인간 사회의 폭력 행위 의 인과관계에 대해 패턴을 찾아내고 멱법칙으로 귀결되는 현상을 발견하였지만, 특정 전쟁의 모든 전투를 대상으로 이 패턴을 검증하는 연구는 미흡하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 현대전 중 한국전과 베트남전을 대상으로 전쟁사에서 추출한 전투 결과 데이터를 통해 이러한 패턴이 나타나는가를 검 증해본다. 연구 결과, 전쟁에서 발생하는 전투의 규모와 빈도 사이의 관계는 멱법칙을 따른다는 것을 확인하였으며, 이를 설명할 수 있는 함수식의 파라미터를 산출하였다. 결과적으로 이러한 현상은 전투 발생에 있어서 scale-free한 패턴이 나타남을 의미하며, 멱함수 분포를 따르는 하나의 질서라고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 제시된 멱법칙 기반의 전투 패턴 분석방법은 전투의 발생, 규모, 빈도, 시기 등의 분석에 있어서 의미있는 접근방식이다.
