This study was to explore the semantic relations among the verbs, meaning act of excretion, such as ‘boda’, ‘nuda’, and ‘ssa-da’ from a historical perspective. The ‘nuda’ was used for the entire data of Korean language history as a verb that most indiscriminately reveals the act of excretion. In case of ‘boda’, this study was to capture the lexicons to express the excretions by euphemism from the data of Middle Korean and the aspects of using them together. Based on these results, this study was to assume that the ‘boda’ was a verb that reveals the act of excretion by euphemism. And, in case of ‘ssa-da’, the meanings of Middle Korean and modern Korean were different. This was because in medieval Korean, it meant that it was abnormal excretion of humans, while in modern Korean, it meant that a child was not toilet-trained. In addition, the meaning of ‘ssa-da’ even referred to the case of normal bowel movements in modern Korean, which was explained as semantic extension of ‘ssa-da’. This study, of course, was to suggest together the fact that the previous meaning of ‘ssa-da’ still remains in data of our modern Korean.

본고는 배설행위를 의미하는 동사인 ‘보다’, ‘누다’, ‘싸다’의 의미 관계를 역사적인 관점에서 탐색하였다. ‘누다’는 배설 행위를 가장 무표적으로 드러내는 동사로서 국어사 자료 전반에 사용되었다. ‘보다’의 경우 중세 한국어 자료에서부터 배설물을 완곡하게 표현하는 어휘들과 공기하는 양상을 포착할 수 있었다. 이를 바탕으로 본고에서는 ‘보다’가 배설 행위를 완곡하게 드러내는 동사라고 추정하였다. ‘싸다’의 경우 중세 한국어와 현대 한국어의 의미가 달랐다. 중세 한국어에서는 사람의 비정상적인 배설행위를 의미하는 것이었다면, 현대 한국어에서는 어린아이가 대소변을 가리지 못한다는 의미를 담고 있었기 때문이다. 또한 이러한 ‘싸다’의 의미는 현대 한국어에서 정상적인 배변활동을 의미하는 경우까지도 가리키게 되었는데, 이는 ‘싸다’의 의미 확장으로 설명하였다. 물론 본고에서는 ‘싸다’의 이전 의미 또한 우리의 현대 한국어 자료에서 여전히 남아 있다는 사실도 함께 제시하였다.
