The COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenging time for institutions around the world, and the Church is no exception. The flocking of believers to “online worship” under enforced lockdowns and socialdistancing measures has given rise to numerous theological debates. The sacrament, along with preaching, is a key element of Christian worship. In the current climate, the question “Is the online Eucharist possible?” has courted many answers. In this paper, I discuss some pointed problems pertaining to the online Eucharist, and its possibilities during the pandemic. The first issue is about maintaining community presence and participation for the online Eucharist. Substituting communality and physical presence can be understood as an issue of space, and thus, resolved by entertaining a new notion of space itself. The second issue is the criticism leveled against the passive participation of the congregation. I argue that the online Eucharist is not always reflective of passivity. The provision for online sacrament and the education of the congregation can, in fact, strengthen active participation in the congregation. The third issue is the feeling of vague repulsion toward the online sacrament and the fear of the unfamiliar form. Historically, the form of the Eucharist has changed constantly, where we see the ritual evolution of the sacrament as a meal. In the Middle Ages, we observe a strict formality, with ceremonies being exclusively for the priestly class. Later, in the Reformation, the meaning of the sacrament was revived, but the sacrament still gave its central position in Protestantism to preaching. As such, this possibility of changing the form of sacrament allows us to consider the online sacrament. It is not without question, however, that correct sacrament theology is required to prevent erroneous conceptions, such as what was observed in the Middle Ages. Nevertheless, with technological advances and environmental changes, new questions arise. While the worship for God itself should not stop, there should be less hesitation in diversifying worship itself, as long as changes are conceptualized appropriately, and the correct theological answers are posited accordingly. Given its own history of evolution, the Church should not be afraid of change. Indeed, in the core value of the sacrament, the sacrament ordered by the Lord must be continuously and faithfully implemented through various attempts.

코로나19는 우리 삶에 많은 변화를 가져왔다. 교회도 예외는 아니 다. 온라인 예배를 비롯한 다양한 신학적 논쟁이 발생했다. 그중에 본 논문은 온라인 성찬을 다룬다. 성찬은 설교와 더불어 예배의 가장 중요 한 핵심축이다. 이 성찬을 비대면 온라인으로 할 수 있는가에 대한 질 문에 다양한 의견이 제시되고 있다. 필자는 본 논문에서 온라인 성찬의 문제점으로 제기되는 부분들을 살펴보고, 팬데믹과 같은 특수한 상황 에서 온라인 성찬이 가능함을 밝힌다. 첫째, 온라인 성찬에 대한 우려의 목소리 중 공동체성과 현장성에 관 련된 문제 제기가 있다. 공동체성과 현장성은 공간의 문제로 치환할 수 있는데, 공간에 대한 새로운 개념의 이해를 통해서 온라인 성찬의 가능 성을 고려해 볼 수 있다. 둘째, 회중의 수동적 참여에 대한 비판이 있 다. 하지만 온라인 성찬이라고 청중을 꼭 수동적으로 만들지는 않는다. 온라인 성찬에서 다양한 참여의 기회를 제공하고 참여자들을 위한 교 육을 통해서 오히려 회중의 적극적 참여를 강화할 수 있다. 셋째로 온 라인 성찬에 대한 막연한 거부감. 익숙하지 않은 형식에 대한 두려움이 있을 수 있다. 필자는 여기에 성찬의 형태는 역사적으로 계속해서 변화해 왔다는 사실로 그 우려에 답한다. 초기 온전한 식사 형태를 가졌던 성찬은 시간이 지나면서 예식으로 자리 잡는다. 이후 중세는 지나치게 형식적이고 사제들만의 예식으로 변질하기도 한다. 종교개혁 이후 성 찬의 의미가 되살아나지만, 여전히 성찬은 개신교에서 중심위치를 설 교에 내주었다. 이렇듯 성찬 형식의 변화 가능성은 온라인 성찬이라는 새로운 형식을 긍정적으로 받아들일 가능성을 열어준다. 물론 중세와 같은 잘못된 변화를 방지하기 위해서 올바른 성찬 신학이 요구된다. 기술의 발전과 환경의 변화는 새로운 질문을 던지고 있다. 하나님을 예배하는 일은 멈추지 않아야 한다. 그리고 이를 위해 다양한 시도를 주저할 필요는 없다. 변화의 시대에 변화를 올바로 규정하고 그에 맞는 올바른 신학적 해답을 바탕으로 다양하고 적절한 방향 제시되어야 한 다. 과거의 관점에 매여 변화를 두려워해서는 안 된다. 성찬의 핵심가 치를 훼손하지 않는 범위 안에서 다양한 시도를 통해서 주님이 명령하 신 성찬을 계속해서 그리고 충실히 시행해야 한다.
