Secular Excellence — On the Evolution of Chinese Tea Aesthetics

For the aesthetics of tea, Lu Yu established its program, the people of the Song Dynasty refined its appreciation, and the people of the Ming Dynasty refined its elegance. This article compares the aesthetics of tea with other art categories, and points out that the basic principle of Chinese tea aesthetics is “Secular excellence”, and its evolution process is not only in common with other art categories, but also has its own uniqueness of tea aesthetics. Since this principle was established by Lu Yu, along with the shift of tea’s geography and tea’s aesthetic center, the tea aesthetics of Song and Ming dynasties all practiced this principle at a higher level. Finally, it points out the shortcomings of the current tea aesthetics research, and today's tea aesthetics research should respond to the characteristics of the times such as technological progress and consumerism.
