In this paper, the theologies of Stackhouse and Hauerwas are compared and analyzed, regarding them as two different methodologies of religion to contribute to the public realm. Stackhouse’s view, called in this paper ‘from outside to inside’ strategy, is that religion brings in key issues from the public sphere, evaluates them, and, with language appropriate for the public context, actively participates in the public discourses to lead positive changes. On the contrary, Hauerwas’s approach, called ‘from inside to outside,’ is that in terms of the best political act, religion should focus on maintaining its original identity and build its own community to be a substantial exemplar of peace. Even though Stackhouse and Hauerwas criticize each other as ‘sectarian withdrawal’ and ‘Constantinian accommodation,’ respectively, this paper tries to connect those two ways to be one inclusive way. Religion and the public realm have to meet at the intersection of publicness and enlarge a circle made by both ‘from inside to outside’ and ‘from outside to inside’ ways. That dynamic give and receive action itself can be a preparation to build an environment of peace.

현대 다원주의 사회에서 종교의 사사화에 대한 재평가와 더불어 사회 공공성 증진을 위한 종교의 역할이 새 롭게 부각되고 있다. 본 논문은 기독교 공공신학의 맥락에서 상반되면서도 상호보완적인 스택하우스와 하우 어워스의 관점을 비교 분석하고 종교가 공공성에 접근하는 두 가지 방식으로 조망해본다. 스택하우스의 관점 은 ‘바깥에서 안으로’의 전략으로, 시민사회 공론장의 주요 사안들을 종교의 맥락 안으로 갖고 들어와 재해석 하고 이 사회에 맞는 언어로 치환하여 공공성 증진을 위한 실질적 변화를 이끌어야 함을 주장한다. 반면에 하우 어워스의 시각은 ‘안에서 바깥으로’의 전략으로, 종교가 본연의 정체성을 지키며 평화의 가능성을 실체적으로 예증하는 공동체로 거듭나는 것이야말로 종교가 공공을 위해 할 수 있는 최선의 정치적 행동임을 강조한다. 스택하우스와 하우어워스는 상대의 입장을 각각 ‘소종파적 도피’와 ‘콘스탄틴적 결탁’이라고 비판하지만, 본 논문은 이 둘의 관점을 종교의 공공성에 대한 두 방법론으로 삼고 포괄적으로 연결시키는 것을 제안하였다. 종교와 사회가 공공성이라는 접점에서 만나 ‘안에서 바깥으로’와 ‘바깥에서 안으로’가 만드는 원을 넓혀나가게 될 때, 그 역동적인 수수작용 자체가 평화의 환경을 만들어갈 수 있게 될 것이다. 이를 위해서는 종교와 시민사 회 모두의 관심과 협조가 필요하며, 특히 종교 내부로부터의 반성과 성찰이 요구된다.
