The history of Cheonggyesa (淸溪寺), located in Cheonggye Mountain in Uiwang-si, Gyeonggi-do, is as follows. First, during the late Goryeo Dynasty, Jo In-gyu reconstructed Cheonggyesa and used it as a Wondang. Second, it was a period of royal importance in the early Joseon Dynasty, as it was included in the state-designated Jaboksa (資福寺). Third, Cheonggyesa, which was burned down due to the Imjin Japanese Invasion of Korea, was restored to the reign of Gwanghaegun, and in the late years of Gwanghaegun, the crown prince used Cheonggyesa as the Wondang. Fourth, the royal family actively supported from the reign of king Sukjong to the Yeongjo and Jeongjo, and it was a period that reached the present time through the end of the joseon Dynasty and Japanese colonial period. What’s noteworthy here is that a Dhyana Gyeongheo, who greatly revived Joseon Buddhism during the period of King Chuljong, which has been underdeveloped since the modern era, was become a Buddhist monk of Cheonggyesa. Cheonggyesa, which has this history, has a considerable amount of woodblocks. These woodblock-printed materials are the largest collection of materials in temples in Gyeonggi-do Province, and are characterized by the fact that they were created during the late Joseon Period. These woodblocks suggest that Cheonggyesa was the Wondang and focused on Buddhist monk education.
