Each local government has been developed rapidly since the establishment of local governments. In order to express the differentiation and identification of each local government, it tends to use symbols as symbolic objects of local governments. This study explores the symbol system, focusing on symbolic objects registered on the websites of nine major local governments in South Korea. The purpose of this study is to better understand the meaning of symbols of local governments and the system, and this allows to identify the correlation between types of symbols, and the structure of the management system of symbols. The scope and method of the study is to understand the relationship between the symbolic meaning of the local government and the types of symbols through the systematic relationship of the department and the person in charge, the name, and the contact information for each item and item by each local government, and to get better understand the structure of symbol system by analyzing and comparing the relationship. Although symbols of local governments have been designated for each local government, the classification of symbolic objects that is different for each local government. It is clear that there is an administrative problem in terms of management or lack of understanding of the design-related management department in the local government. Thus, it can be said that the need for a design expert who really understands the symbol management system.

지방자치단체 출범 이후 지자체들은 급속한 변화 속에 발전되어왔다. 각 지자체는 상호차별화와 정체 성을 표현하기 위하여 지자체 상징물을 기호로 정하 여 사용하고 있다. 본고는 우리나라 지자체 중 9대 광역지방자치단체 홈페이지에 등록된 상징물 중심으 로 상징물 상징체계에 관한 연구이다. 연구의 목적은 지자체 상징물이 갖는 의미와 상징물 종류 간의 체계 및 상관관계를 이해하고 나아가 상징물 관리체계 구 성을 이해하는 것이다. 연구범위와 방법으로는 9개 도 단위 지자체 홈페이지에 나타난 상징물을 지자체 별 항목과 종목별로 담당부서와 담당자, 이름, 연락처 의 체계관계를 통해 지자체 상징 의미와 상징물 종류 끼리의 상관관계 및 상징체계 구성을 이해하고자 하 였다. 연구의 결과 각 지자체별로 지자체 상징물을 지정해 놓았으나 상징물 항목과 종목의 분류가 지자 체마다 제각각임을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 지자체에 디자인과 관련된 관리부서의 이해 부족 또는 관리차원 및 행정상의 문제로 지적할 수밖에 없다. 이를 통 해 상징물 관리체제의 전문성을 이해하는 디자인 전문가의 필요성이 절실하다 할 수 있다.
